iriver shows off the new S10

While everyone was focused on the launch of Apple's new iPod, iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle, iriver slipped a new portable audio player under the radar screen. iriver's tiny new S10 measures just 1.65" x 1.18" x 0.43" and weighs in at a feathery 0.62 ounces. For comparison, the newly announced second generation iPod Shuffle measures 1.07" x 1.62" x 0.41" and weighs 0.55 ounces.

The iriver S10 is available in capacities of 1GB and 2GB and is rated at 8 hours of playback (compared to 12 hours for the iPod Shuffle). Where the S10 trumps the Shuffle, however, is with its 1.5" color OLED screen, SRS WOW technology and support for MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG. And for good measure, iRiver has also tossed in an FM tuner.

Pricing and availability hasn’t been announced yet, but we’d take a gander that pricing will be competitive with Apple’s 1GB iPod Shuffle which retails for $79.

If by "competitive" they mean close to twice the price then I agree. I'd expect at least $150 for the 1GB and $200 for the 2GB given iRiver's current models. Look at their current lineup and their current prices. There is no way in hell that a player like this, even in 1GB size is going to be less than $100.

The 2GB Clix is less than $200. I would imagine the price of the S10, with its smaller screen, lesser battery life, and slightly reduced features should cost less than the Clix.

The new Shuffle 1GB is supposed to be released at $80 when it comes out. No 2GB model is listed yet (will it ever?). I dont know about any of you, but I have always disliked the Shuffle. Especially when it was originally released for $150 (1GB). It's a USB memory stick with MP3 capabilities. Oh boy..
So maybe Iriver wont bring the price down to exact Shuffle levels, but I would much rather spend a couple extra $ for a small MP3 player with a DISPLAY than a Shuffle.
