Apple today announced a new refresh to its line of iPods that include the iPod, the Nano, and the Shuffle. The new iPod will have a 60-percent brighter screen and have an increased video playback time of 3.5 hours, which is roughly 1.5 hours more than the current iPod. Apple will also be releasing a bigger capacity iPod that sports an internal 80GB hard drive that can play video for 6.5 hours.

The iPod Nano will also receive a refresh. Apple today announced that the iPod Nano will now be all aluminum and available in various colors. Currently, the iPod Nano is made of plastic and was previously reported to be easily scratched. Available colors for the new iPod Nano are green, silver, black, blue and pink. Apple will be making the new iPod Nano in three flavors: 2GB, 4GB and 8GB. The 2GB iPod Nano will only be available in silver color.

2GB: $149 - Silver only
4GB: $199 - All colors except black
8GB: $249 - All colors

The new iPod Nanos will come with a new charger, armband and new lanyard. Apple claims that the new Nano will be able to play for roughly 24 hours non stop.

Along with new iPods, Apple will be introducing new software for the small players as well. New generation software will include such features as gapless playback, searching, and a host of new games: Bejeweled, Pac Man, Texas Holdem, Tetris, Mahjong and others. Users will also be able to purchase games for their iPods off of iTunes for $4.99 per game.

Apple's iPod Shuffle will also receive a revamp. The Shuffle has been reduced in size to roughly the size of the iPod radio remote. The iPod Shuffle's body is now metal and comes in only a 1GB version for $79. Apple said that the new Shuffle will ship in October of this year.

Nope.

There are many mp3 players that use AAs or AAAs, - there's no reason ANY player should be made with proprietary batteries. Just another useless cost.

okay so how about the other portable "video" players out there? Do they use standard batteries. What about camcorders and Digital cameras, even better I wish I can put 8 D-cell batteries in my laptop. Sound more expensive to me.

Not that I've looked very hard but I don't recall seeing any lithium-Ion AAA's at the store.

It is very easy to get Lion or uasualy better NiMh AAAs on the net. The problem with the Lion batteries is they need to be much more carefuly charged and has higher then normal voltage.

It doesn't even beat my Creative Vision M which i bought for $280USD early this year. ;( Apple just reduced the price and fixed the screen brightness bug and increased the HDD size.

There will never be Li-Ion AA/AAA just because alkalin cell (like the AA) has 1.2-1.5 volt while Li-Ion has ~3.4 volt, so no way to replace one with the other.

Li-Ion has great advances over NiMH batteries by having
- More energy per volume or weight.
- Faster charging.
- Can be kept longer without being discharge.

The only problems about them is their price (compare to NiMH) and the lack of some standard.

Do you really think the form factor makes a difference? AA or AAA rechargeble batteries also wear and won't hold charge after a certain period of use. Exactly like the propriety batterypacks.

I personally like the built in battery since it makes the entire device a lot smaller and I always recharge my player with the usb-cable.

I prefer the slim propriety battery. I'm not alone.

AA and AAA rechargable batteries don't cost nearly as much as any proprietary li-ion (that's even replacable); AA and AAA rechargable batteries don't age nearly as quickly when you don't use them at all; AA and AAA batteries can be fully discharged and charged constantly without penalties, very much unlike lithium batteries.

Unfortunately, form factor means everything to the nano.

I prefer something that lasts for longer than a year.
I'm not alone.

Lithium Ion is a newer technology with many benefits, including a discharge rate of only 5% per month and they can be charged at any time.

The new lithium ion batteries are the main reason portable electronics have shrunk in size. It's also the main battery technology in the Tesla all electric sports car!

First of all , when I say 'age', I mean a permanent loss in charge capacity- not that it simply discharges.

As per the wikipedia :
"A unique drawback of the Li-ion battery is that its life span is dependent upon aging from time of manufacturing (shelf life) regardless of whether it was charged, and not just on the number of charge/discharge cycles."

"Lithium-ion batteries should never be depleted to empty "

"Li-ion batteries should be kept cool. Ideally they are stored in a refrigerator. Aging will take its toll much faster at high temperatures. The high temperatures found in cars cause lithium-ion batteries to degrade rapidly."

So while part of the life span of the battery may depend on your charging habits, other parts do not.

I have never said form factor wasn't important for the nanos - it is, and yes; li-ion and especially li-polymer batteries can be moulded in almost any fashion. Ever seen 'gumstick' NIMH-batteries though?

My old Creative had an interesting twist on using a proprietary Lion batteriy. It seemed at first that even though the cell was easy to change I couldn't get any cheap replacements because only creatice sold them. Then I relized that the normal replacement cells for a laptop are basicly the same thing but shorter. So I now have two of those with small chunks of metal as extenders and between the two I can have my player going for well over 24 hours.

no my iRiver iFP-799 uses a single AA battery and lasts for ages. It's only 1GB but it's so small and wonderful. If it was slightly larger in capacity it would be the perfect mp3 player (for me).

Apple despises competition. This is why their batteries are not removable. They don't want non-oem batteries competing with their sales at 1/2 the price. They do the ame with the Macs, etc. They force their customers to buy Apple supplied batteries. The Soma-induced sheep that their customers are gladly fall for this trick. Soma! Soma!

I'm not an iPod fan. I would rather purchase a different MP3 player, but the design of the shuffle is great. Being able to clip the player onto your shirt instead of using an arm band is pretty cool. It would work great in the gym and for me it would work great at the poker tables.

I wish they would integrate an FM tuner to the ipods. This is the only major drawback I see on the shuffle. The battery life is great, way better than any AA or AAA mp3 player.

You can always get the FM tuner functionality from the remote accessory. Not everyone wants/needs to have an FM tuner - I certainly don't want/need it.

The only reason I would want the FM tuner is so that I could listen to the TVs when I go to the gym. Other than that I don't want it or need it. Having to use a remote accessory would be worthless if you are wanting to use it in the gym since it would increase the bulk of the unit.

The FM tuners that are sold are twice as big as the new shuffle making the overall package bulky. Plus the whole reason I like the shuffle is that it has the integrated clip. Do you think that the add on tuner is going to have the same style clip or any clip at all?

Going to the gym doesn't mean that someone lifts weights. They could be running on a treadmill. Which would be the only time I would listed to the FM tuner and watch TV anyways. Have you ever tried to bench press and watch TV at the same time?

BTW. Bulk has to do with the size of the unit not necessarily the weight of the unit. In most instances it has nothing to do with weight.

What are you talking about? The iPod remote is smaller than the new Shuffle and that is what adds the FM tuner, it also has a clip. In fact, the new Shuffle appears to have been styled purely on the remote. It's also been out a fair while.

I looked at what MS had planned for the Zune, and I was unimpressed from the start. MS doesn't have a good history of competing with others, just outmuscle them.

What I WANTED was a user swappable battery player with good playtime battery life, and a touchscreen. It must also have wifi, and no DRM. THAT would sell.

I agree. Just by what I've read here, apple didn't add any features to the ipod... so I dont understand how zune is "dead" when it offers many advantages in its own right. Wifi is a HUGE improvement over current MP3 players. Sorry, but Apples sense of design style wont compensate.

OMG! APPLE RE-PAINTED THE IPOD AND PUT A NEW CASE ON IT!!!1111 ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY APPLE. oh, and icreased the nano to 8gb...wait.. I can do that with my Sandisk Sansa via microSD without having to buy a new player. Not to mention Sandisk released their 8gb player a while ago. Looks like the ipod is "dead" before its even released. Come on...

I think the battery issue raised above was that ipod batteries are not removable. so when they die (in 18 months or so) you have to spend $$$ on a new ipod.

I was considering buying an ipod recently so popped into an Apple store to give it a tryout. I was stunned to see that you can’t create or edit playlists from within the player, but only from within iTunes. I hope they add this feature which is very important to me; I’m not holding my breath though.

It's called on the go playlists. You can add songs one by one or album by album, then either save the playlist or clear it. Once you hook it up to your computer, it will upload the playlist.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the user manual and it’s still too limited for my needs but better than nothing. A worse problem is that I can’t edit the current order of a playlist or add tracks to it. Back to the drawing board. :(

I won't be surprised if the new Nano is the best selling iPod ever. The iPod Mini was the iPod that really "did it" for Apple. Everyone wanted a Mini. Even people who didn't know what it was. Considering that now you can have the same thing in a smaller package, for $50 less than the original price of the iPod Mini, with a completely flash based hard drive and a full color screen with a 24hr battery life....it's a slam dunk.

That new Shuffle is going to sell ridiculously well too. I know I'll be getting one. In fact, that will be my first iPod ever. For $80 the ability to carry a few CDs with me to tune out the day is well worth it. I was actually about to order an older model Shuffle, an armband, and a dock...but the price came to $150+ so I was waiting to get my depoist back from my last apartment. Turns out, I got it today, lol. But now for $70 less I can get the same thing, only better.

Apple's record was 14m iPods in a single quarter. I actually think they can beat that this holiday season if they have enough TV ads so that everyone who could possibly want a new iPod knows about these puppies.

The new iPod wasn't really terribly impressive, but I didn't expect it to be. Sure, we all want that widescreen video iPod, but the reality is that battery life would be appauling unless you signifigantly changed the iPods dimensions. IMO, even the battery life in the 30GB is kinda "eh". The 80GB kind of hits it right if you can actually get a full 6hrs out of it.

The new 4GB Nano is the iPod for everyone. For most people, 1,000 songs is their entire CD collection, or at least the part of it they want to listen to. Every blonde haired blue eyed college slut is goign to have a pink iPod Nano by Spring sememster next year. I guarnatee it.

I think you mean "damn skunk" Magic-man. Look at the new Nano; it's the old Mini in slightly new clothes and no moving parts. The Shuffle is going to sell well? In the NYC area, the only people I see using Shuffles are clueless people, mostly middle-aged guys trying to look like they are 20-ish, or the strapped for cash young adult. Go price the iPod Snuffle against anything from any of the other decent manufacturers in the same capacity range and you'll see the "damn skunk" I was referring to.

I will agree, to some extent, about the appeal of the Nano to the public. It has the "potential" to be the biggest seller based on the size of the average consumer's collection of music. But it really won't exploit that potential until Apple makes a flash-based player that has a wide screen display that can be viewed in either portrait or landscape modes so that it can play music and a limited amount of videos.

It's 24h according to Apple. BTW Who keeps the LCD backlight on constantly? I mean touch the wheel and it's lit, after a few seconds the light is off. 24h playback. Not 6h.

The first gen nano was supposed to get 14 hours playback but that is a lie at least for mine, per the way they rate it the best I can get is 8.

Can someone please explain the new Shuffle to me? I am looking at it and can't make heads or tails of it...
Is it a clip one? Is it a fold-out? I take it the USB is no longer incorporated in the design.

I was the same for a minute. It's a belt-clip, and it uses a supplied USB dock.

A tiny USB dock, by the looks of it.

I agree with previous posters; making the black nanos cost more by 'value adding' (ie only having a black 8GB) is an interesting strategy, but an annoying one. They did the same thing with the Macbook and I wasn't impressed then either.

When you compare it with the old nano, it's actually THINNER. Not noticable though.

I believe the dimensions are roughly the same except the thickness, which is VERY SLIGHTLY thinner.

it's true, they aren't the only ones. but why would anybody buy a one time player? why don't they give us the option of changing the battery?
this is why i would never buy the nano, even though they did a great job on improving the battery life.
i am waiting for a 10Gb player with changeable batteries (probably sandisk) and then i'll make my move.
does anybody know if the creative zen V plus has a permanent battery or can it be changed?

The current shuffle doesn't have a screen. Plus wouldn't you know what song you are on just by listening too it?? How often do you search on your MP3 player looking for a specific song? I never do it, so there really isn't a reason to have anything but a play, pause, stop, next, and previous buttons on mine. No volume because I always have it at full blast.

Here is my take on the battery situation:
I don't mind that they use proprietary batteries... at all. The fact is AA and AAA are defunct standards that don't mix with super-portable devices. HOWEVER, my very perfectly sized NOKIA cell phone, with similar battery requirements, has a Lithium battery that is REMOVEABLE . In other words, since there are those people who live with their music players, they should be user swappable ! If the battery dies, let me buy a new one from apple. How about an external charger for hot swap batteries? Come on Apple... why can't I replace my own battery the same way I do on my cordless and cell phones?

c: some sort of visable entry mechanism

c is out simply because the smooth back panel leaves no spot for the mechanism. Screws would hurt the style as well as making a smaller battery (and less life). B is mostly for AA/AA batteries, which as pointed out above are totally out of place for an iPod because of size. Hell, even the video is at most the same depth as the diameter of a AA. A is out because giving access to the internals to the general public is not something apple wants to do.

So dont count on user replacable batteries any time soon.

I could care less about the batteries; the screen on the iPod still sucks for movie playback - did anyone see the demo of "The Incredibles" on it? More like incredibly small..

Whether Zune blows or not is moot; at least Microsoft one-up'd Apple on the screen real-estate for movie playback.

I'm a big audiobooks user. I was stunned to learn that the almighty iPods do not have a bookmarking feature (I heard you can bookmark only if the audio file is in "audible.com" format). I recently introduced a friend to audiobooks. He likes them a lot but unfortunately, he has an iPod and realized that it sucks without bookmarking capability. I have a Creative Zen and am a happy camper.

I bought an iPod 4th gen about 2 years ago and now it is dead. Why? HD is clicking. Yes I probably run with it too much or something. My battery never had issues. I used to take it to class and use it during my breaks/walks to class, and my commute on BART home. I could charge once a week. Too many people charge everyday and that is WHY your batteries will die.

No matter what, every battery whether Li-Ion or NiMh or NiCd will lose charge storing capabilities one day after excessive charging. While the memory effect may be claimed to be nonexistent in Li-Ion, it is still somewhat there (voltage depression). Memory effect is honestly just a consumer branded term but you know that some material is physically being depleted which means you can't have unlimited charges.

Apple uses top notch quality batteries and Li-Ions should run about 300 charges. Remember that stupid video or sound clip or article I forgot, but it mentioned that iPods die in 1 year? Well if you charge your iPod every single damn day of the year, meaning you listen to something like 12 hours of music a day, then yes, it will die in 1 year.

Working in the library this summmer, I probably had to charge once every 2 - 3 days because I would listen to it while at work. Assume you do that for a long time, and your iPod should still be good for a little over 2 years.

By 3 years your iPod wil lprobably be scratched up and you probably would be upgrading anyways. My hard drive obviously died before my battery, so its time to get a new one.




8gb nano is harddrive based??

I couldnt help but notice that my very new 8gb black nano was making noises when i was transfering my music to it.. putting the ipod against my ear i'm almost positive it sounds like a miniature harddrive: spin up, seeking, spin down.. etc..

anyone else want to confirm this? (not quite ready to take the ipod apart just see if it is indeed harddrive based)

It's times like these that I'm glad I've been holding off getting a new iPod. I'm excited that the Nanos are now aluminum bodied... and that their storage capacity went up.

Hey, EU. Why not sue Apple for bundling software and headphones with the iPod? It's a monopoly!

Sorry, still pissed about that whole EU vs M$ crap.

Anyways, does any of this look any different or function any different than an old iPod? The nano turned into a mini. The shuffle...well, it was always gay, no difference with the change. The battery lasts longer. Whoopty f***ing doo. Give me an easily replaceable battery. Then I can just swap out batteries while on the go. I could care less about the bigger screen. If I wanted to watch videos, I'd get a PMP.
