Sony Computer Entertainment America expects final assembly of PS3s to begin at the end of September

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) was able to reveal some new information on the highly anticipated PlayStation 3 at a recent analyst meeting. SCEA reports that final assembly of the console will start by month's end. The company has already stated that it will have 500,000 units ready for the November 11/17 Japan/US launch with each country getting 100,000 and 400,000 units respectively. European countries will being receiving their shipments in March 2007 once production is stabilized.

SCEA was also able to provide additional details on the product mix when the consoles finally arrive this November. US Retailers will receive an 80%/20% split of premium/core systems. As a refresher, the premium system features a 60GB hard drive, HDMI support, multi-card reader and will retail for $599. The core system features a smaller 20GB hard drive and does without HDMI or a card reader and retails for $499.

Sony is also expected to provide more details on its online service for the PS3 at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. Details have been scarce up to this point with Sony only commenting that online multiplayer would be free for everyone as opposed to Microsoft charging customers $50 a year for an XBOX Live Gold subscription to do the same.

Software prices?

....In other news, it has been reported that PS3 games will now cost $79 due to the current prices of blue-ray discs....

I'd like to know the cost of software given that blue-ray is still very expensive for an empty disc.

Also might be a good opportunity to buy 10 and sell on ebay given the insanity that surrounded $1000+ 360s.

Zelda Gold? It wouldn't suprise me if we did see $80 PS3 games - especially if one or two games for the system do use BRDs. I can only see this happening for RPGs that have extensive HD FMV, but nowadays, I think most devs try to use the game engine for cut-scenes anyway... We'll see, I guess. Is it wrong for me to want Sony to fail? I just grow so tired of countless products being hyped beyond belief and then not delivering, but still succeeding in the marketplace.

Rewarded for mediocrity.

If any of the PS3's in the first shipment have any problems of any kind, it will probably be the final nail in Sony's coffin. The only way they can rewstore their good reputation is if everyone is blown away by the PS3, but no one will be impressed with a buggy console that costs over $500.

Who says the first games that come out will be on Blue Ray Discs?

DVD-9 still has plenty capacity for current games.

Sony themselves have stated that every game WILL be released on Blu-Ray. I don't know what else to say about that..

U are too short sighting
A good console should ready for next 5 yrs
Everyone said a CD is well enough to fits any games back in 2000 when PS2 launch

Nowadays, u hardly can find any console games can fit into a CD.

What do you even know about the current prices of blu-ray discs?
Recordable and rewritable blanks will of course be expencive as hell, after all they are currently targeted at freaks that didn't mind spending a grand for their recorder.

Publishing studios don't burn their products on pc burners though... they print them in bulk, and while it is true that producing BD-ROM is somewhat more expencive than either dvd or hddvd, we're talking of it costing like, $1.2 instead of $0.20 per disc. Sure it is a big difference considering the huge number of discs produced at once, but still it isn't a reason to noticably rise costs for the end consumer.
Its the same for movies as it is for ps3 games - actual media production costs are insignificant part of the retail price.
If we do end up with $80 games or movies or anything, it will be because there are morons out there willing to buy them at that price, not because of bluray.

U are joking everyone man! Are u BTing too much without buying anything in HMV before?

BluRay and HD-DVD moive price are marked similar with current DVD. I'd say both of them are bargain.

Also, BluRay's price is very close with HD-DVD, at least in Asia-Pacific regions like Japan, Hong Kong and Australia.

Don't forget production capability of BluRay is far higher than HD-DVD, as most hardware and media industry stand in the BluRay side. The massive production capability helped to bring the BluRay cost down!

..I was also under the impression that the $499 version also did away with the wireless lan support? Does anyone know if that is correct or not?

Yeah tha's almost a no brainer..I will wait and see how the launch goes..

..I am even more curious to see a PS3 kiosk so I can actually see the PS3 in action, to see if Sony overhyped it like they did the PS2..

20% basic version, you gotta wonder why sony even bothers making the basic version. Just because 360 did it doesnt mean that ps3 has to also. monkey see, monkey do.

U guy missed one important point.

Sony marketed both PSP and PS3 as high end gaming + AV solution, immediately marking 360 as low end product.

Who cares $599 if they already own a $20000 HDTV?
