Amazon has announced to offer live television channels via its Prime Video service, for an extra fee.

Prime Video only offers on demand films and TV shows in the UK. But people will soon be able to subscribe to popular channels such as Discovery and Euro-sport individually, without paying for a bundle of channels.

According to an analyst the launch line-up of channels was “not immediately desirable” and would struggle to attract satellite TV customers. As Tom Harrington, an analyst at Enders says, “Amazon launched a similar thing in the US, and the big selling point was that you could get HBO and Showtime programs, all under one umbrella”.

Sky has HBO and Showtime locked down at least for now, and will continue to hold on to them therefore that is not going to happen here. Of course this is a starting point for Alex Green managing director of Amazon Video. He also added that they are offering linear TV channels and have a good spread of big partners and he is sure that will only grow.

Viewers will be able to pay for curated “ channel” of programs to stream on-demand, such as the Yoga Anytime Channel, and Horse & Country Play, which is billed as the “home of equestrianism”. In the past companies such YouTube, Amazon. Apple and Facebook have been trying to get TV bundles together, but so far only YouTube done it, told Harrington to BBC. But Green said Amazon wanted to offer customers more flexibility, by letting them subscribe to individual channels. Now people have a chance to try it out and cancel at anytime.
