The machines could carry out half of Scottish jobs in just 10 years. Said the Institute for Public policy Research Scotland,” 46% of jobs about 1.2 million are at high risk of automation in the period up to 2030.” Of course this isn’t only Scottish problem but it is universal, and then people more likely will work longer hours and often have multiple jobs to survive.

As IPPR Scotland said changes were needed so people can get more training and career support when they are mid-way through their working life.  The report said that Scotland “ continues to have lower rates of in-work progression” than the UK, while pay rates have reduced in real terms and are behind those for the UK.  It is clear that there is a need to design a skills system better able to work with people already into their careers to help them to retrain re-skill and respond to world of work of 2030

To respond to the huge changes around demographic, technological and climate change. We have   to focus on retrofitting the current workforce to provide them with the skill they need, to deliver the inclusive economic growth we wish to see.  Every advance society without reform of the skill system could see changes to the economy harm whole sections of population, and whole communities, leaving many behind.   As we know the pace of technological change will be relentless in the years ahead, but we will have opportunities as well as challenges too.
