The new service will compete with Apple's iTunes and the Zune line of music products from Microsoft
Samsung Electronics has just announced the company will offer an online music download service to complement a new
line of MP3 players, according to the company yesterday. Pricing,
fees and exact details haven't been released yet, but the service
is expected to launch sometime before the end of the year. Online
downloads along with a subscription service will be offered by the
company, who is working alongside MusicNet to offer the latest music
service.
Music listeners will have
access to over 2 million songs from all major record companies.
Consumers in the United Kingdom, France and Germany will be first to
use the service – but Samsung and MusicNet plan on expanding it to
other parts of Europe and to select regions in Asia. Because of the
overpowering dominance of iTunes in the United States, it is not
clear when Samsung will make the service available in the US.
The store will be
compatible with the Samsung line of MP3 players, including the K5,
which has an integrated speaker built-in.
Even
though a number of companies have tried to combat the popularity of
the Apple iTunes service, not many have been successful. Microsoft
announced its line of music players and the online music service
designed to complement the MP3 players.
"Spreading the rumors, it's very easy because the people who write about Apple want that story, and you can claim its credible because you spoke to someone at Apple." -- Investment guru Jim Cramer
