Gadgets Sandisk Introduces Sansa c200 Series

New MP3 players start at $80

Following up on the launch of the 8GB version of its Sansa e200 Series, Sandisk has unveiled its new Sansa c200 Series entry-level MP3 players. The Sansa c200 Series is the follow-up to the Sansa c100 Series MP3 players first introduced in January of this year.

The 1.3” x 3.1” x .6” players weigh just 1.51 ounces with battery and feature a 1.4" color screen, a microSD slot for expansion, an FM tuner/recorder, voice recorder and a user-replaceable battery good for up to 15 hours of playback. Supported audio formats include MP3, WMA and protected WMA DRM.

Sandisk is aggressive with pricing as 1GB Sansa c240 and 2GB Sansa c250 players will retail for $80 and $100 respectively. The Sandisk empire continues to grow…

Zune?

I really think MS should have put some weight behind Sandisk as I think their product line has really shone recently. This is most certainly a Shuffle killer. I think they need a more catchy product line name though. Sansa doesnt ring bells like iPod does.

One thing I dont like is that they have to create a new flash container every 6 months. microSd? Whats next, nanoSD, picoSD? Make the carts any smaller and they would blow away.

Definately agree about this being a shuffle killer. It's silly that the 2 GB versio is only $20 more. It's about time for Apple to update the shuffle, as the current models are now quite old. I have a 512 MB shuffle, which I use all the time, both for music, and as a general memory stick.

Doubt it's gonna be a shuffle killer. Shuffle is not exactly a top notch player anyway. People buy it because it's Apple. Sansa could do much better if it had better software. I own old Sansa 100... what a nightmare. They could not fix notorious bugs in a year. Sansa users heard only promises and one minor bug fix since original release.


Better buttons?

I hope the c-series has better buttons than the e-series. I had an e240 and one of my gripes was that the buttons weren't ergonomic. The reason they weren't ergonomic was the protruding mechanical wheel, which the e-series doesn't have.

You are of course aware that the wheel on the e-series was completely redundant, you can use the up/down arrows instead?

$20 more to get the 2GB version? Might as well go with that for all purchases if the cost difference is that little.

Different Priorities

I guess I have different priorities than some, this is much less desirable to me than their old e100 line.

e100 had regular SD slot and is confirmed by owners to support cards more than the 2GB originally spec'd. e100 had a low cost but still quite usable screen, making it's bottom line lower (I got mine for about $40 AR).

e100 has AAA battery so your player won't be trash in 4 years (not much point in replacing the battery as such special batteries will cost a lot if you can find them (time spent too), while e100 allows taking an extra battery with you.

Where the c200 shines is finally a reasonably stylish (and hopefully sturdy) case. Pity but it's quite irrelevant for the purpose of such a device, to play music and be tucked into a pocket, not put inside a glass case on your mantel. It's smaller too which is nice, except that makes a color screen all the less beneficial and it has smaller navigation buttons. Do I need to see color pictures that are postage stamp size? No.

c200 has FM recorder too, which might be handy, but come to think of it I seldom if ever use the FM recorder on my other players.

So essentially to me it seems sandisk has taken a giant step backwards in MP3 players. While it may look sleeker when it comes down to it's use it offeres more detractions than benefits at a higher cost.

I realize my priorities are different than others' but if anything Sandisk was taking market away from Apple (albeit a tiny bit) by having a different alternative, not by trying to make same thing in a different flavor (in which case you'd have just bought the Apple).




Nonexistant CS support

My Sansa E200 failed three weeks ago, just 1 month after I purchased it. I'm still trying to get Sandisk to honor the warranty, or even reply to emails.
