Snail venom compound ‘offers chronic pain therapy

Scientists from the US suggest. “Small snail venom could be used to develop a treatment for chronic pain”.

Normally used to disable or kill its kind, venom also appears to act as long-lasting pain relief. Study done on rats’ shows that the compound works three days later. The outcome of this study and research opens possibility to create a new pain therapy for patients who had run out of options.

“Most medicines for moderate to severe pain works by reducing the sense of pain, by attaching proteins in the brain and organs of the body that is called opioid receptors”.  Said researchers.

Apparently, there is another compound that called Rg1A was found in the venom of a Conus regius snail, a native of the Caribbean which works in a different way using a new pathway. Scientists from the University of Utah said the compound appeared to have a beneficial effect on parts of the nervous system, and this could bring a new method to treat pain.  J Michael McIntosh, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Utah Health Sciences, Said: ” What is particularly exciting about these results is the aspect of prevention. He also added “ once chronic pain has developed, it is difficult to treat.”

The chemotherapy drug treatment in the animals caused them to be hypersensitive to cold and touch, experienced pain but those treated with snail compound did not. Founding was that the compound was working 72 hours after injection. Still preventing pain, Prof McIntosh said.

Of course this is a new start and for sure sooner or later there will be another founding that close the 72 hours gape.
