Even though we've seen two major recalls from Apple and Dell
concerning Sony-manufactured notebook batteries, Sony
proclaims that there will be no more battery recalls in the future. Rick
Clancy, a spokesman for Sony Electronics, says that the VAIO line of notebooks
have only been involved in two reported incidents of overheating -- he was also
quick to point out that one of those incidents involved a counterfeit battery.
“As far as Vaio PCs are concerned we don’t anticipate any
need for a recall at this time, and that’s true from our understanding of other
manufacturers we supply this technology to as well...there’s no indication that
there’s an excessive number of situations that have occurred that would warrant
this type of action,” said Clancy.
The previous two recalls of Sony-manufactured batteries
involved nearly 6 million units – 4.1 million from Dell
and 1.8 million
from Apple. Sony has stated that the recall will cost the company between $171 to $258 million USD.
And even though Sony doesn’t anticipate any further recalls of its batteries,
the company is currently
under investigation by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
