Leopard's "top secret" features are still hidden

One of the greatest aspects of the Internet is its ability to get information from one place to another quickly. Despite still in beta and still in development, Apple's next-generation operating system has already made its way into the hands of users. During its World Wide Developers Conference earlier this month, Apple demonstrated several new features of Leopard to a large audience of developers and also passed out copies of the OS. It didn't take long for the WWDC copy of Leopard to find its way online as torrents. ThinkSecret has a selection of screenshots from the leaked beta.

Some of Leopard's features such as Time Machine, Spaces and RSS Safari were revealed during the preview showing. Steve Jobs however, indicated that many of Leopard's other ground breaking features were still top secret. User forums are currently being updated with user feedback on the leaked Leopard beta, but like Apple indicated, users currently feel that the OS is "incomplete".

Currently, the general user interface of Leopard appears to be much the same as it is in Tiger, but there are enhancements in several places. Applications such as iChat and Mail also receive major face lifts and updates to their functionality. Users will also find that Leopard's new Spaces window and desktop management feature is a pleasant and welcome addition to Expose.

Apple indicated that Leopard will be complete and ready to ship sometime in the spring of 2007. You can read more about Leopard's upcoming features here.

Well as most of the ppl r usin' windows operatin' systems, ppl doesn't kno the true performance of a Mac. But consider this, most of the movie industries are using a mac based computer because of its good performance to edit movies and also edit audio mainly because the OS is more stable and user-friendly(i suppose) than a windows OS. Its upto the ppl whether to use a Mac or Windows.

Yup... Mac's are pretty well known to be great for audio/video editing and that type thing. They are great for industry professionals. Unfortunatly, thats a very small percentage of the poulation. Many non-industry people like Mac's anyhow, in the end both Mac and PC have good and bad points... It's up to your personal choice. I personally choose against buying a Mac, due to the hardware limitations (I cant build my own, and am not interested in a mass produced machine)... But I would love to buy OSX and install it on my PC if it were possible. :(

movie industrie using MAC, ask that to the creators of star wars episode I II and III pure amd not mac and same to pixar studios lots of people switched from mac.... why becuase there are more powerful systems for less money....

This kind of useless info is becoming way too common in the internet era. Preliminary pictures and info about something that isn't exactly coming out tomorrow. The final product may be similar, or maybe not. Before anyone gets uptight about me saying useless, I'll ask you, what do these screen shots really do for you? Really? Anyone who would buy or not buy based on these is a real piece of work. Not wanting to start a flame, but stuff like this is just useless filler for people to waste time with. Ooops, I've already wasted enough time with this.

Well I'm interested to see what Apple has in store with Leopard so I thought I'd take a look at the pictures. I believe I'm not the only one. I don't really get your point. Dailytech shouldn't release leaked information etc about different products because they might not represent the actual product when it reaches the market? I think you have wandered to a wrong site if you aren't looking for news like this...

Sorry for going off topic. But wondering if the Mac Pro's will have Front Row bundled with it in some form when Leopard gets released next year and If next=gen Cinema Displays would have some sort of iSight built in?

Easy answer to your first question: Yes, Leopard will include a new version of Front Row that can be installed on any Leopard-compatible Mac. This was mentioned as the "Complete Package" item in the keynote demonstration that also included an updated Photo Booth and Boot Camp. What the updates will be is anyone's guess but at least everyone else will get this software.

A web cam in an Apple Cinema display, given Apple's recent desire to put one in all of its iMacs and notebooks, suggests that this could be a real possibility but it's not one that I've heard either rumoured or reported. Still, it does sound a good bet.

Umm.. here's the thing... For someone that knows what they are buying, a "made it myself" PC is the mercedes, and the mass produced boxes are the Toyota's... Not to single Apple out, dell, gateway, and any other major manufacturer are all Toyota's.

Most MAC people dont understand that at all, because you cant build your own MAC.

Most of Mac users understand it very well. Most of them just want a machine as a tool not the actual purpose. The main reason why people buy a mac is because of the OS. The second most important reason is the elegance of the hardware. Just take a look at a Mac Pro (open the cover) etc and you realise why it costs that much. case for example has no competition in the do it yourself market (Antec P180, Lian Li's etc). Then consider the actual hardware with manufacturers support. When something is wrong with your mac you call Apple be it hardware or software issue. Can't do that with DIY-PC.

I think I should mention that I've put together my last 10 PCs and will continue to do so. Still I value Apple's products a lot. Btw. I typing this from my PC...

Oh, one other thing. Technically you can build a mac since Os X does install on PC's if you know how to do it.

I do agree that there is a draw to people buying a MAC. I also want OSX, I just dont want thier hardware, but I understand why many people do want thier hardware... Its just not for me, for the reasons I have posted.

And yes, it is possible to install OSX on a PC, but from what I have seen and heard, you have to be a pretty talented programmer which most people are not (including me). If there is an easy way, or cracked version out there, please do post it, I'd really love to give it a try on my Athlon X2.

I have been a MAC user for many many many years. I have using the MAC when they went downhill to the day they made a comeback. The only thing i hate is all the new Intel MAC Anti-Microsoft idiot user.

they're no mercedez- thats the problem. You should be able to pay for just the software, and make any hardware configuration you desire- thats what make the p in PC stand for personal. Apple just need to change over to a sony-like highend hardware retailer and sell their software for all platforms. If its truely open-source it would be open to use anywhere. You can get the same specs (if not better) for any mac or macbook to either buy from another manufacturer, or build yourself (in the desktop case). If apple's os is so great, then why are relying on self-made computer hardware as a crutch. Opening up their os to all platforms is the only way they'll ever go from niche to mainstream.....

Uh, probably because they couldn't afford to release their OS to all platforms. Right now, with a 25% margin, they get something like $500 out of every Mac Pro and probably $120 out of every Mac mini.

To make the same amount of money (and pay their engineers, QA, technical writers, artists, and support staff) they would have to sell easily 2 or 3 times as many boxes of OS X. If each box of OS X, at $120, nets them $100, at 80% profit, that means they would need to overnight hit 15% marketshare.

To put it another way, the only way Apple can move from Mac only to OS X open is if they hit 20% or 30% marketshare first. Then there will be a big enough existing customer base to support an open OS X.

This doesn't address the other issue, of PC build quality.

If Apple actually released OSX for PC's they probably would get 15% market share overnight, maybe more. That is assuming they didn't do a release like EA does with their games.

How do you figure? What force would drive them to 15% overnight?

That still doesn't address the issue I mentioned though: 15% marketshare with an open OS is identical to 5% marketshare with a closed OS, plus additional support and technical issues. They have to beat 15% (which is why I mentioned 20%) for the move to have any benefit to Apple.

OSX could never be released for the DIY market....Apple would spend the next 3 years trying to make it compatible with the hundreds of thousands of possibly DIY hardware combinations.

I think that is the real problem I have with this superiority complex that Apple users have regarding how stable thier OS is. It has to be easy to create an OS that works well with a standard set of hardware compared to an OS that has to work on many different hardware configs.

For that, I would suggest an Apple Hardware Compatibility List. That way, if the hardware isn't on the AHCL, the computer assembler is to blame if it turns out to be the hardware. The computer makers and parts makers can submit their hardware for testing with a certification fee and each board is charged a per-unit licence fee.

Frankly, I think that's the way to run a Windows computer too. I don't remember ever having stability problems with Windows when running computers and parts that are on the WHCL.

I very highly doubt Apple would do this though I think it can be a workable solution.

The analogy is not flawed, you just didn't get it. PC is like a kit car. Sure you can put whatever engine in it and tweak it until your fingers bleed. Mercedes is something that comes with factory support and everything has been matched by the manufacturer. The driving experience is different. Mercedes is quiet, handles well etc. A kit car is cheaper, accelerates a lot better and has higher top speed. Sure you can get similar performance from Mercedes but you have to pay a lot for their premium product. The actual driving experience is different. When you have a problem with your car you can call Mercedes and the problem is taken care of. With a kit car you need to fix it yourself or you can drop it to a car repair shop where they have to solve if the problem is because part A is incompatible with part B etc... add n+1 other examples...

Your analogy is still flawed. You talk about Mac vs. PC as if there are different parts under the hood when in fact there are not. They use identical hardware, whereas Mercedes has their own engines and "hardware," if you will, and Toyota has their own unique, completely independent equipment and designs.

A Mac does not "drive" any more uniquely than a PC, in terms of hardware operation, other than the fact that it uses a different OS. It has the same Intel inside, you can even open up a Mac and replace its RAM if you really wanted to, but to upgrade to 1GB or 2GB on their site you have to pay an unreasonable premium.

I could easily replicate what's inside a Mac, part by part. Whereas you can't "kit" a Mercedes.

Today more than ever a Mac is not just hardware. It's a combination of hardware and software. The reason why people buy macs is because the software and hardware are so well integrated. If Apple would license their OS to every platform soon they would have problems like MS (n+1 devices with crappy drivers, compatibility problems etc). Apple wants to hold the strings for both hardware and software and that's exactly what most mac users want. If there's a problem, blame Apple.

Real life example: Call computer "X" support for your wlan problems. They blame Windows and tell you to call MS. MS tells you it's a problem with Intel drivers, contact Intel support. They say it's a problem with the computer manufacturers software bundle, etc etc...

Btw. Apple tried licensing some time ago. It backfired and they canceled the deal.

Actually the Chrysler Crossfire is a Mercedes 320 with a different body, they didnt even remove the tags. Apple tried a few years ago to make a go at licencing, but most of the products where superior to what Apple was offering and they quickly pulled the plug,didn't want to pay developers to make it work with different hardware, this is why MS slays Apple. Apple quality is an oxymoron having worked on them for years since 1977 here is just a small list of problems, floppy drives where terrible, the video in the Macs wasn't even soldered half the time (can't beat Sony for quality LOL),flyback transformers too small, single button mouse, you can trash the OS by moving it to the trash can, too many releases of the same machine with different bodies, OS6,7,7.1,7.5,7.6,8,9 will just steal Darwins freebsd and put a gui interface on it,were terrrible and they only had to work on one box. Apple repair manuals are a joke as are their error codes basically replace motherboard, memory, or harddrive. I remember installing NT4 on MAC powerPC because it ran better and it ran all the software they needed no emulation it was a straight install.

the hardware is rubbish? now that apple has moved to intel, the hardware is similar. but mac's usually are higher quality cause apple manufactures it all. also, the reason it's more expensive, is that there is no competition like there is in the PC side. apple makes all the cases as well as coolers, motherboards, mice and keyboards. so it costs more. it is a reason why macs are usually more stable.

Agree, but I would assume that Apple does a lot of the R&D for many, excluding the Mobo, HD, RAM, CPU, & GPU, of their products. I guess there really is much left that actually runs the comp, nevermind. Screw Apple.

monopoly has its advantages though, think of the dvd vs betamax, would you rather have them both or you like it better the way it is now?
If MS and Apple would have a 50% market consumers will only have to lose because:
a. due to competition OS prices will be lower, so you'll only spend $100 every 3-5 years
b. due to two different markets of smaller size all software must be created to support both platforms and therefore all applications/games will be 50% more expensive ...
Think about what you wish ... the hell is paved with good intentions ...

Good job flaming Apple! You just proved you know nothing about the industry. First of all. There are virtually no companies that actually design and manufacture their computers because that would be too expensive. IBM, Alienware, HP, Fujitsu Siemens etc all subcontract other companies to put together their computers. For example laptops. There are maybe 5 big companies that actually manufacture notebooks for different brands (mentioned above). Every brand also uses processors, chipsets, gpus, memory, harddrives etc from other companies.

Your message is hilarious since every single company does the same, yet you specifically attack Apple ("!!!"). That's just ridiculous.

Btw. Apple has multibutton mice nowadays.

Of course it also helps to keep Mac's stable as they do not have to support every hardware device on earth. The plethora of choices on the PC causes many instability issues. Plus the hardware isn't all that bad... the pricing may be a tad bit high but you can get a good variety of performance options that would meet the need of anyone but extreme power users. I mean dual Xeon with a quadro card isn't exactly shabby IMO.

Of course I would never buy a Mac ;)

OK all you fan boys out there. I used to sell both at C*USA. 75% of people didn't even know why they wanted a computer- you've heard the stories? They're all true. The thing about Macs is their simplicity. That's what drives the Mac community. They don't know how fast the RAM DAC is on their video card- they don't know what memory timings are- they don't even know what a chipset is. The only thing they care about is that their Mac can do whatever with style, flair, pizzazz. Mac's have a certain je ne sais quoi that PC's don't have. I experienced this firsthand at a MAC Expo. I am a hard core PC user mind you and they had a booth for Wacom with some paint program. All I know is that when I sat down to try it, I was actually inspired to paint. It was an incredible feeling of, of....CREATIVITY! I was transported to a world of invigorating colour. My pen was giving life to a canvass of imagination! I have never felt like that with a PC- and I had several progs- Lightwave, 3DSMax, etc., etc. Yeah they don't use the latest and greatest hardware sometimes but the OS just kicks the H377 out of anything M$ has ever put out. I know I sound like a fanboy but I'm not. I own an Athlon XP and am upgrading to AMD 64X2 4400 Toledo (I like the freedom to maximize performance). If they would put it out for all PC users- I guarranty you you would see a huge jump in users- 40% increase in market share is a conservative estimate. I sold both so I know what people would like. They want to run OSX on all their PC's!!!
