If you were looking for price cuts in time for the holiday season, guess again

Despite commentary from an analyst at the American Technology Research that Sony would cut the price of its PlayStation Portable in time for the holiday season, those rumors will not hold true. P.J. McNealy had stated that Sony would trim the price of its PSP to $149 to better compete with the Nintendo DS which currently retails for $129.

"Currently we have no plans to cut the price of the PSP at this time," was the company line given by a Sony UK spokesman to GamesIndustry.biz in response. But rather than cut the price of the PSP, it is widely predicted that Sony will instead further trim the price of the venerable PlayStation 2 just in time for Christmas. And despite the fervor surrounding the impending launch of the PS3, the PS2 faithful still have much to look forward to including the upcoming Yakuza.

The Sony PSP has been soundly beaten by the Nintendo DS in the sales race so far this year. For July 2006, Sony was able to move 162,000 units of its PSP compared to 377,000 units for Nintendo’s DS and DS Lite handhelds.

I still don't understand why anyone would want one of these, but maybe that's just me...

well just wait till Metal Gear Solid OP comes and it will sell like hot pancake. Reason because MGSOP is the story between Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear Solid 4. So it fills in the blank what happened after MGS3 to lead it MGS4.

Well if Sony can get some really awesome RPG on the system by this year than it can save the PSP from a horrible death.

I've heard that they weren't too far off in the race compared with the DS. IDK.

I still think the price is way too much. Sony should focus on making game machines instead of multimedia machines. I would only considering the PSP if it was accompanied with a $100 price drop. Then I'd think about the low amount of games that trickle out of developers like an old man who can't go. And then about loading times (smackdown vs raw 2006).

Hey, I remember Sony saying that they would release a longer laster battery for the PSP. Now that's paying for potential.

Poor Sony...

IMaybe it's just me, but has there been ANY good news from sony since the PS3 announcement? All news coming out of them has been "more PS3 delays and high price", "No price cuts", "What rootkit???", "We'll kick everyone's ass cuz we're sony, and only based on that fact alone and not any qualitative reasons", etc.

IMO Sony has taken a sharp turn for the worse and just isn't listening to, or care about its customers while demanding top dollar. I have totally lost faith in them and will be sceptical about any product or service they release. I don't think they will see a dollar of my money in a long time.

Well, their CRT TVs back in the day were top-notch. That's about it, though.

Good point.. Actually even to this day, no company in the world produces a better CRT TV than the Wega product line from Sony. What's that high end Wega called again? Darn it left my brain as I started typing this post...sorry about that...but anyway there is a really uber Wega model that honestly looks better than quality Plasmas and LCDs (all HDTV of course).

Only problem I ever had with the Wega's...I think my car weighs less . ;)

The Grand Wega?

Too bad CRT's are going the way of the dodo, however.

Maybe Sony needs to keep the price up to pay for the fallout from their DRM Rootkit fiasco.

Or they need to counterbalance the huge losses due to piracy from their music division.

Or they need to counterbalance the frivolous lawsuits, privately funded research, and utterly ridiculous advertising related to piracy in their music division.

And the huge anticipated losses from blu-ray.

And the losses from memory stick.

and mini-disc.

and betamax.

It's silver and blue, has flashing beeping things and says Sony on it, so you're not ub3r unless you have one!

They should ship the PSP with promotional coupons to get a free hair bleaching and blue tip dying with the purchase of a PSP!

Screw the PSP, screw the PS3

I'm looking forward to a price drop on the PS2 later this year! If it goes down to $99, I may just buy one of the only Sony products I have/will ever own!

call me an idiot but..

call me an idiot but if they were to announce price cuts on psp a month or maybe 2 months before ps3 is released it would do 3 things, draw more attention to them, sell more psp's (duh), and possibly keep umd movies alive for a while longer as well as sell more games. all of those = good for sony. but hey im no marketing genious... and thats only if sony plays it smart and starts advertising for the price cut.

money
By eomhS on 8/15/2006 9:45:37 PM , Rating: 2
if you look at profits instead of numbers its not a big difference: DS=377,000*129 is roughly 48,633,000$
PSP=162,000*225 is about 36,450,000$
pretty close for the huge difference in sales numbers
