Ubisoft shows its support of the Nintendo Wii game console

Game publishers have started revealing which titles are going to be available on the yet to be released Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 game consoles.  Ubisoft today announced seven titles that will be released on or around the Wii launch date.  The announcement of seven games by Ubisoft shows the company's confidence in Nintendo's next-generation console system.  "We're thrilled that Ubisoft will be unveiling Wii versions of both exclusive new IP and established franchises," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer for Nintendo of America.

The seven titles Ubisoft announced:

* Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WW II
* Far Cry
* Open Season
* GT Pro Series
* Monster 4X4
* Red Steel
* Rayman Raving Rabbids

Ubisoft France has also confirmed that the Wii version of Prince of Persia will be released for the console in March 2007 in France.  Confirmation of an English version of the game has not arrived.  Ubisoft has also stated that other Wii games are currently under development.

I'm really curious about this, and whether it's really a detriment to the Wii. How many people in the US (or for that matter, the world) have an HDTV of some sort? Five percent? Ten percent? I've not been able to find any "definitive" answers doing some simple googling. Personally, I do not directly know of anyone that has an HDTV.

Thus, if no one has HDTV, why is it a "bad thing" that the Wii doesn't output HD? Sony's PS3 isn't going to look all that much greater on an SDTV than Wii will (in terms of resolution) ...

Well, I did just pay 4 grand for an LED DLP TV, and I would enjoy playing games that support 1080p. Will I get a Wii? Sure, but I'm probably going to get a PS3 too.

I don't really care about HD Gaming on my HDTV because I have a computer that does beyond HD. I was just correcting the previous poster on Wii not doing HD gaming. Im looking forward to the gameplay that Nintendo has been known to provide.

While I dont know an exact number, I know its growing, and growing fast! I did a stint at best buy during the holiday seasons last year, and HD tvs where out selling SD tvs probably 3:2? Most people buying new tv's are getting HD, well buying from consumer electronics stores, we wont count RedNeck-Marts (K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc).

"GeeWizz, bubba, look at this here new fangeled tecknalergy! Ah cordless reeemote cun-trol and stereeo sound on ya'lls culur pikture-toob!!"

Even so, I have seen some HDtv's coming out of there...

very true.

bet you most Americans are still stuck on 480i.
Just bumping them to 480p should be enough to impress them...

besides, of the 10-20% of Americans with HDTVs, bet you atleast half have fricken composite inputs plugged in the back.

Early 2006 the number was 15% and now it's roughly 20%. 1 in 5 U.S. households have at least 1 HDTV. That's 60 million people. I consider that a pretty large market.

I'm getting worried/suspicious about the Wii...
I remember when the Gamecube came out, it had a digital output for component video.... and 480p. Then when no one was buying the cables nintendo realized they were spending more putting the adapter in, and the new revision of the 'Cube dropped the feature... but was it because people didn't have tv's to support it? or the steep price?

Will we at least have a digital support for 480i/p?
It might be a good concession for hdmi and HD....

the suspicious part is that this thing can play gamecube games.... and has the same audio and video outputs.....
whats stopping us from buying, for all we know, a slot-loading gamecube with faster processors....
does this thing even have to emulate gamecube to play gamecube games? If it natively supports gamecube, I think all of us supporting the Wii are in for a major let-down...

I'm pretty sure they have 480p on the Wii (sometimes called ED or "Enhanced Def"). True smooth 480p still looks great. Some other nice things about 480p: only requires component cables, early Tube "HD" and Plasma sets max out at 480p. (Yes some early Tube "HD" sets can also do 1080i, but I greatly prefer progressive resolutions for long term gaming.)

I'll be very shocked if the Wii doesn't have 480p as the Gamecube had it for some games.

As usual with Nintendo, all the games are for children. No mature gamer would be seen dead wanting to play the likes of that. The PS3 will be the best console ever!!!!11

Only joking, but I'm sure some PS3 freaks would have looked at that list and thought that. They'll ignore the fact that the other six games aren't really for kids.

you realize that these nintendo "kids games" are 1000000x more fun than ANYTHING on xbox/playstation?

mario kart and super smash bros are absolutely amazing games not because they're kiddie - but because they're fun EVERY time you play.

yeah that was an overly rabid reply lol.

I can only hope this generation Nintendo can shed that kiddy image. Personally i dont see where it came from, i've yet to see a game that is 'mature' that is as fun as mario or zelda.

Far Cry is perhaps as far from a children's game as you can imagine. I have a 50" Plasma and even though no HD is kind of a let down, I'm more stoked about Wii than any other console. Who didn't want to swing Link's sword as a kid? As far as I'm concerned I am just a grown up who loves good ol fun Nintendo games.

The Wii is going to ROCK! Microsloth and $ony should take note on what it means to be gamers. Nintendo has always catered to the avid gamer as opposed to the fanboy who needs fancy graphics.

Did you actually play these games yet? Blazing angels and Far Cry is already available on the 360. Open Season is based on the pixar movie so its probably going to be as good as the other games based on movies. The last four also haven't been released yet but you believe the avid gamer will enjoy them.

Is this a port of the xbox 360 far cry or the pc far cry or a new game?

I have been wondering the same thing myself and have looked for screen shots, but haven't seen them as of yet. Red Steel looks pretty darn good, so I imagine far cray will look slightyly worse at times due to all of its outdoor foliage rendering, but I imagine it will look quite excellent.

Perhaps you were playing sucky games, but Headhunter, Shenmue II, and Ikaruga sure as hell don't "look like butt" - especially through a VGA connector into an HDTV.

I must have missed something. When I bought a Dreamcast with Soul Calibur it absolutely blew me away with its beauty. When did it "look like butt", whatever the heck that means? Frankly, I lament the demise of the Dreamcast and that some thieving bastard stole mine.

No launch game on this green earth has ever impressed me like Soul Calibur. Heck it still looks better than most PS2 games.

A. those are just Ubisoft titles, not 1st party Nintendo games nor any other 3rd party's, read the fvcking article.
B. Read Steel is a highly anticipated launch title that is supposed to be unique and exlcusive to Wii.

I'll agree that beyond that I couldn't be too excited about anything else (unless they make Far Cry handle well with the remote and it isn't just some lame port). The WWII game could be cool as well (sounds like a flying game and could be very cool with the remote).
