New solar array will have the capacity to charge thirty electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles

Ford’s World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan is about to receive a new addition in its parking lot: the state’s largest solar array. The American automaker has teamed with DTE Energy to construct the array, which will provide 360 covered parking spaces and 30 slots for electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle recharging.
 
The 1.038-megawatt solar array has the capacity to power 158 “average-sized” homes and will offset an estimated 794 metric tons of CO2 emissions yearly. Construction on the solar array will commence next month and will be completed by early next year.

 
DTE Energy is footing the bill for the construction of the solar array, and will handle ongoing operation/maintenance of the installation for the next 20 years.
 
“Our fundamental purpose as a company is to make people’s lives better,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman of Ford Motor Company. “We do that by creating outstanding products, by investing in communities where our employees live and work, and by using technology to tackle global sustainability challenges. Those beliefs are embodied in this project.”


Ford Focus Electric
 
Although it appears that the new solar array’s 30-charging ports will support any plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, Ford would probably prefer that it stays stocked with its own homegrown varieties. Ford currently offers two plug-in hybrid vehicles: the Ford Fusion Energi and the Ford C-Max Energi. Both vehicles can travel roughly 21 miles on battery power alone before having to start the 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine.
 
Ford also offers the $35,000 Focus Electric, which is completely battery powered. However, that vehicle has performed poorly in the marketplace compared to its rivals.

Trying to knock a state for having too much precipitation while living in an area of perpetual drought...

I agree its not the best scenario for solar, but a wind farm in the middle of Dearborn seems less feasible, and Stirling engines need space and heat. Everything is a compromise.
