ASUS looks to undercut its rivals in the Android Wear market

Is $199 (Samsung Gear Live) or $229 (LG G Watch) too rich for your blood when it comes to Android Wear-based smartwatches? Now it appears that ASUS is aiming quite a bit lower for its entry into own entry into the nascent market.
According to TechCrunch’s sources, ASUS is set to launch an AMOLED-equipped Android Wear smartwatch that will be priced between $99 and $149. With Motorola definitely looking trending the high end of the market with its much-lauded Moto 360 (estimated MSRP of $249), ASUS’ entry — at least at a $99 price point — just might be enough to trigger an impulse buy from consumers that have already bought into the Android ecosystem.

As you may have already known, Android Wear smartwatches require a smartphone running Android 4.3 or higher (check compatibility here) to function as anything other than a glorified watch.

Leaving aside the tedious wearables so far announced let's for a moment speculate about what Apple might have in the pipeline, and therefore what a well designed and thought through wearable strategy/device might look like. I have no idea what, if anything, Apple might announce this fall, all we know is that Apple has been working on something for a while that is big enough to warrant hiring some of the biggest names in sensors and wearable technology. And they have been working on it for quite a while.

Then consider the following:

Apple has in iBeacon, a locational information and commerce system that is already good enough to generate widespread real world deployment.

Apple will by this fall have the most seamlessly integrated array of PC and post-PC devices of any ecosystem, tied to a powerful and growing cloud system.

Apple has very, very high premium brand presence in the market.

Apple will have by this autumn an integrated home automation and health automation system with a very large developer base.

Apple has successfully rolled out a large scale Touch ID program on it's flagship iPhone model and Touch ID will almost certainly migrate to all iPhone and iPad models this autumn as well being opened to developer and third party access (in a way that remains very secure).

Apple already has 800 million iTune accounts with credit cards attached (to put that in perspective that's four times as many as Amazon has).

If Apple can insert into that matrix a range of attractive, affordable (by Apple's standards) wearables designed to disrupt and succeed in markets like sports and medical accessories, home automation and mobile payments and commerce, then Apple could add an enormous amount of value to it's ecosystem.

I wish people would stop replying to Tony brain SWashed. This is his entire viewpoint summed up:

Apple good. Everyone else, bad.

No amount of debate, logical or otherwise, is going to change his views, or even cause him to think openly about anything that anyone says.

Apple is his religion.

Resist the temptation to bite. It's a lost cause. Just -1 and move on.
