If you want Amazon's upcoming smartphone, we hope you like AT&T's network

Amazon’s first smartphone is set to be publicly unveiled tomorrow in Seattle, but The Wall Street Journal today confirmed one important detail about the device. According to its sources, Amazon’s smartphone will be an AT&T exclusive.
The arrangement with Amazon and AT&T is not exactly surprising, as the latter currently provides wireless data service to the former’s line of tablets and e-readers. Boy Genius Report first broke news of AT&T exclusivity back in April and stated that the phone would come with Prime Data, which appears to be an offshoot of AT&T’s Sponsored Data program.
We already know that device is said to feature an innovative 3D interface – also thanks to BGR -- courtesy of four front-facing infrared cameras that tracks a user’s head movement. Amazon’s teaser video, which shows the reaction of people using the device for the first time, definitely has us excited to actually use the device in person:

the average consumer is not going to care and will buy it if it was tied to PrimeCo.

I disagree with that. When it comes to mobile phones and the people i've encountered, it seems that this is the one area where even average joe does a little bit of homework. Since before i recall people in my social circle (which is 99% average joe non-geek) have bought a sim or contract based on the companies rating and the coverage offered. It is not like simply buying a phone, they're buying into a contract they'll be stuck with for many years and relating to something they care very much about. Average joe may indeed buy the first phone, or laptop, or tablet that they like the look of regardless of spec etc, but for phones, something average joe uses every hour of his waking life, carrier is a huge deal.

Mostly because this is a multi-cycle game now for most consumers. Since the early 2000s, large percentages of consumers have had mobile plans in 18 mo. to 24 mo. intervals. A bad experience at a store, with a phone, or a dropped call leads to switching and for the most part, carriers haven't changed very much. The average consumer probably has experience with multiple carriers and a negative experience with at least one carrier.

I'm not sure that the specific carrier is a big deal. I've been with a few, and they are all as bad as each other. Get bad service from one, you leave them for another, and after a year or so the same thing happens. They really don't care. Everyone I know has had the same experience as mobile phones have been around for a long time now.

What people do care about is being able to choose tho. When there are a few carriers to choose from, people at lease feel like they might be getting some choice and aren't being ripped off. Just one carrier will make people think that they are not getting a good deal, IMHO.
