Samsung's latest Android tablets manage to beat Apple's iPads on weight, and thinness
Samsung is bolstering its efforts in the tablet market with two new offerings which JK Shin, CEO of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Division, says are “setting the industry bar higher for the entire mobile industry.”
iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display
, the 8.4” and 10.5” Galaxy Tab S tablets share the same display resolution and processor/GPU, which means they mainly differ in screen and battery size. That means that both comes equipped with a Exynos 5 Octa processor (1.9 GHz quad-core + 1.3 GHz quad-core) for Wi-Fi models, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor (2.3GHz quad-core) for LTE models, 3GB RAM, 2560x1600 resolution Super AMOLED displays, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, microSD expansion, 8MP rear camera, 2.1MP front camera, and optional LTE connectivity. Both tablets of course run Android 4.4 KitKat.
Besides the differences in screen size, the 8.4” model comes with a 4,900 mAh battery while the 12.5” model has a larger 7,900 mAh battery.
Both models are also thinner and lighter than their respectively iPad counterparts. The 10.5” Galaxy Tab S weighs 465g and is 6.6mm thick compared to 469g and 7.5mm for the iPad Air. Likewise, the 8.4” Galaxy Tab S weighs 294g and is 6.6mm thick compared to 331g and 7.5mm for the iPad mini with Retina Display.
The 8.4” and 10.5” Galaxy Tab S will be available next month starting at $399 and $499 respectively. Both will be available in Titanium Bronze or Dazzling White.

RE: Happy with my Samsung...

Samsung is obviously targeting the iPad with these tablets. And if Apple is getting $100 per memory upgrade, then OFC Samsung is going to do the same. That's just basic business!
But at least with Samsung, you get an SD slot. That's all I'm saying. For the same money as the iPad, there's WAY more value here.
Of course I would love to have a terabyte on every device I own. But that's just not the world we live in right now.

Thanks to KitKat, that SD slot is
, so you're still looking at 16GB for $500. Samsung can put another 16GB into that tablet and the BOM goes up by a dollar at most.
"WAY more value"? Yeah right. This thing is overpriced by a full one hundred bucks.
