The supposed Nintendo DS headset
Details about the headset began floating around last month

The first image of the official Nintendo DS Headset has been publicly released on the Internet.  Ever since the original Nintendo DS launched several years ago, a standard headphone port and microphone port were placed in the handheld console.

The new peripheral is a microphone and earpiece that is mono-channel only, which means it will not be ideal for stereo gaming.  It is speculated that the peripheral is scheduled to be released in time to be used for the Pokemon line of video games, which allows voice chat.  The headset can also be used in Metroid Prime Hunters, a game that has online voice chat capabilities.

The headset will be released in Japan on September 14 for 1,200¥ (about $10 USD).  Nintendo has not yet announced a release date for North American or European gamers.  The XBOX 360 also comes with a mono-channel headset that attaches to the controller for in-game communication.

I don't think it's for stereo gaming... I think it's for communication, like voice online. Why would you want to cancel out the game sound completely?

I think he meant that it's designed for games utilizing voice chat, not all the other games.

Ahh, my bad. For some reason I was thinking this was for the Wii.

No shit Sherlock! A mono earpiece will not be ideal for stereo gaming... that is pretty damn obvious :)

Big companies pretty much know that they can get away with anything, no matter how inexpensive to make, by pricing it around $20.00. If this is the true price, I appreciate Nintendo coming out with a "branded" piece of equipment for a reasonable price.

Maybe I'll pick this up for my mother's DS. She claims brain age isnt hearing her voice that well. I think its just an excuse...

Brain Age has notoriously crappy voice recognition, which ends up rocketing your perceived age skyward if your voice is deep and/or raspy.

Skype anyone?

Wasn't there something about a browser being available for DS?
Would be a cool idea to give the DS skype capabilities with the new headset, taking advantage of the wifi connectivity.

Will sound still come out the DS speakers? The stereo/surround job they did in some games is great, and I'd hate to see that gone.
