Metallica, the largest opponents to online distribution, decided to no longer let the dollars slip away

Veteran band Metallica, one of the first music artists to take offense to the original peer-to-peer file sharing program Napster, has decided to offer their music for sale on the Apple iTunes music download service.  Although the band has had entire albums available via the Internet for years, this is the first time where individual tracks can be downloaded.  Starting on Tuesday, the band put up its entire backlog of 10 albums on iTunes.  Metallica also made several unreleased tracks available  for their first four albums.  Due to Metallica's record company overseas not wanting to "play ball," songs can only be offered on iTunes in the U.S. and Canada.  According to a press release on Metallica's web site:

Over the last year or so, we have seen an ever-growing number of Metallica fans using online sites like iTunes to get their music. So, in continuing with the tradition of offering our albums for sale online (which we've been doing for a few years through various sites), as well as making our live concerts available for download in their entirety (through the site), we are now offering fans the opportunity to obtain our songs individually.

Metallica didn't want to offer individual songs on iTunes after the program's launch in 2003, because the band didn't want to "contribute to the demise of the album format."  The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, along with Radiohead are just a few examples of bands that are currently have declined the option of having content on iTunes.

the REAL metallica died in a tour bus accident when their bassist cliff burton was killed, cliff was the prime force of their technical acheivement (big music theory guy); im pretty sure that if cliff were still here, metallica would have been the first group to endorse napster, have a significant internet prescence, and tragidies like the black album and the load/reload "double album as two albums" (so they can make more money) would never have happened

I'm a Metallica fan, I even like Load and Re-Load, I went and paid for the CDs waiting in line at midnight at the local shop on the day of release... unlike some fans and haters I can be realistic though. Starting with the fact that I don't ever expect a band to keep releasing the same stuff over and over... bands evolve. I would be disappointed if every Metallica album was another Ride the Lightning clone... the band members can't stay 22 years old forever.

When the black album came out, people complained that it sucked. I heard that people said the same thing when Justice came out, but I don't know, I was only like 13 then and didn't know about Metallica yet. As far back as I can remember, people have been saying that the current Metallica sucks, and only the previous stuff was any good. I figure in 20 years people will think St. Anger is good and the latest 3 albums (or do I mean downloads... the album format by then will be dead lol) suck.

Someone always has to throw a Cliff comment in there too. He's been dead for 20 years or so... time to move on people. He's like the metal version of Lennon I guess. Some things aren't meant to be, get over it.

As for the lyrics:

Now I lay Lars down to sleep
I pray his copyrights to keep
If he gets poor before he wakes
He'll have to sell fries and shakes.

Hush little Larie, don't say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
It's just the fans making bootleg tapes
I hope you choke on your sour grapes

That's just brilliant, is that really a Weird Al song?

No kidding, I think Master of Puppets and self titled (the "Black" album never actually "had" a title, everyone just dubbed it as such) where the largest cause of their MASSIVE explosion of popularity. I give Metallica full credit for their dues, because;
- unlike rap, where its all about thugs (definition of a thug: someone who is to weak to stand alone and succeed in the world and must rely on supportive organisations, aka gangs, to raise his self esteem about being a loser )
- unlike mtv genre where its all about sex,
- unlike country, where when you sing every song backwards, he sobers up, gets his dog, woman and truck back and is in a good mood...
Metallica has a LOT of real life reference, struggle, personal suffrage and original truth behind it. Anyone who says that their songs all sound the same obviously has not sat down and listened to them. Metallica is an American Icon, to disrespect that fact, like them or not, is open disrespect for American Music History. Actually that’s an understatement, they are a World Icon. While all the other "rock" bands of the day where wearing spandex, singing in girly voices, and trying to look g@y as possible, Metallica was laying the way for modern metal, punk, and alternative, etc. Simply because the sound of St. Anger was more so mediocre does not make it any less impressive if, like in all their previous albums, you listen to the message its just as (if not more) powerful as before…

Personally I am kind of glad they put the lawsuit against Napster, and contributed to its closing down (even if only temporary) because it was becoming flooded with way too much low quality garbage. Half the stuff downloaded was semi in-audible.
