Gateway FX510XG

Dell XPS 410

Alienware Area-51 7500
Here comes the first wave of Core 2 Duo

Intel's Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors were announced two weeks ago with much fanfare from the hardware editors and the enthusiast community. Intel had brought a great-performing chip to the market that was faster than every processor currently available and was much cooler than its Pentium-D predecessor. Today, there were a slew of new desktops and workstation announced that use Intel's new Core 2 processors for desktops, so let's get started.

Gateway has announced new desktops based around the new Core 2 processor: the FX510XG and the FX510XT. The $2,199 FX510G comes equipped with a Core 2 Duo E6400 processor (2.13GHz), 2GB of PC5300 memory, 320GB SATA II, 21" widescreen LCD, 16x DL burner and an ATI Radeon X1900 XT graphics card. The $3,999 FX510XT brings a Core 2 Extreme processor (2.93GHz), 4GB of PC5300 memory, 1TB of storage (2x 500GB SATA II in RAID-0), 21" widescreen LCD, 16x DL burner and dual ATI Radeon X1900 XT CrossFire graphics cards.

On the Dell front, there are three new Core 2 offerings: two desktops and one workstation. The XPS 410 and Dimension 9200 can be equipped with a variety of Core 2 processors and up to 4GB of 800MHz DDR2 memory. Hard drive options range from a 160GB SATA offering up to 500GB with DataSafe data protection. Also available are ATI graphics solutions along with AGEIA physics accelerators. The machines come loaded with external ports including two front/six rear USB 2.0 ports, an optional front Firewire port and an optional 13-in-1 media reader for photo enthusiasts. Operating system options include Windows XP Home, Professional and Media Center 2005. And of course, both are Windows Vista ready. The XPS 410 and Dimension 9200 will start at $1,595 and $1,674 respectively.

Dell's latest workstation offering is the Precision 320. This monster can be equipped with Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Extreme processors and fits right in with any company needing a high performance OpenGL platform. System memory is scalable up to 8GB and both ATI and NVIDIA graphics solutions are available. Hard drives up to 750GB are available as are numerous RAID configurations. Prices start at $1,050 for the Precision 390. For those that would like to see the Precision 390 in action, Digital Video Editing has posted a review of one equipped with a 2.93GHz Core 2 Extreme processor.

Samsung has a new Core 2 Duo solution of its own. The new BZ60 desktop is powered by a Core 2 Duo E6300 processor, 1GB of PC5300 memory, a 320GB SATA II hard drive and a GeForce 6200 graphics card. Pricing is not yet available for this Core 2 offering.

And we can't forget Alienware's new Core 2 gaming desktops: the Area-51 7500 and the Area-51 ALX. Both feature Alienware's new P2 chassis, can be equipped with Core Extreme processors, NVIDIA SLI graphics solutions and can support up to four SATA hard drives in a RAID configuration.  The Area-51 ALX ups the ante by offering an NVIDIA Quad-SLI graphics solution. Alienware's Area-51 7500 starts at a mere $1,799 while the Area-51 ALX isn't even warmed up yet until you fork over $5,999.

So X6800 is currently priced at $1,360 at newegg and is OUT OF STOCK! Wow.

Well, if I were newegg price setting guy, I'd start with $1,500 US right now, especially after reading those AT reviews ;-)

Half of USA is going to kill for Conroe at the moment - and newegg stops at $1,360?! Oops - outta stock. That's pretty stupid. Let's hope they set it to something more reasonable - I think $1,600 would be nice to start with :D I love to see rich kids to pay hard! :-))

newegg is gouging. Other vendors are still listing them at just over $1000, although they are not showing stock either.

That might be, but I personally don't give my business to companies who do that. Availability will be the same at other online vendors whose prices will be closer to list price. There's no reason to pay such a high ransom.

You must not eat, drive a car, or live in a house, because quite literally all companies do what newegg is doing. It's called supply and demand. Low supply, high demand leads to higher prices. My guess is each of these companies are "testing the waters," so to speak. They're counting how many hits are nailing the core 2 pages and estimating initial prices accordingly. The only difference between tigerdirect and newegg is newegg has given a more realistic idea of what the price is going to be while the others are giving the "MSRP." Once a company realizes they can sell these things for more and make more profit do you think they will keep these prices low?

Newegg hasn't had sold any Core 2's yet. I was around when that E6800 page popped up and it never had the "add to cart" option.

Still better than dieing and bankrupting your family all at once. Few serious illness' really have an effective long term treatments or it is ridiculously expensive. Let's say you develop multiple sclerosis. How long will you be able to afford $1500 (the cost of one overpriced C2D x6800) for 1 months supply of Copaxone? I thought so.

On the other hand I can still pay to jump the line if I choose to/can afford. I do it for an ophthalmologist all the time, because the waiting lists are really infinitely long.

How do you do this if visiting specialist in Canada requires reference from your family doctor? Try to come to neurologist or gastroenterologist - they won't even let you past their assistant. Assistant asks if you have reference from your family doctor, and IF you have one, she'll put you on a waiting list for an appointment. For example, in Edmonton I needed to see a gastroenterologist - they told me I HAVE TO WAIT FOR NINE MONTHS! And paying doctors for faster service is ILLEGAL in Canada, so excuse me but I suspect you're lying here a little ;-)

Or are you illegally bribing your doctors? Tell me how to do that, I need it bad! Sometimes I can wait for months/years, and sometimes I CAN'T! Sometimes I wanna pay to talk to my doctor next day or so. Tell me the secret how you do this, pleease!

Khm,... let me think about this one. /checks the map/ Oh yes, as I suspected, Slovenia isn't in Canada ;-)

I find it hard to believe you can't pay a doctor to see you though. It just doesn't make sense. Aren't there any private practitioners in Canada? I mean maybe you can't pay for a CT scan, but you should certainly be able to pay for a faster gastroscopy or a colonoscopy. BTW every man, woman or child over 50 should get one done. While not terribly pleasant, it can save you a lot of trouble later on.

SORRY FOR BEING OFF TOPIC!

OK, maybe you are Canadian, but then you must be from Alberta - this is not quite Canada so Albertans don't have to participate in discussion - it's not about them. Canadians are all the rest who pay 15%. Alberta is one lucky oil-rich exception.

Right. This is why so many parts of Canada feel so alienated. You're from Ontario I suppose (since you think 15% is the average)?

It's this kind of arrogance that makes the West think that the East has too much power and makes Quebec think that the rest of Canada is out to get them.

From what I remember, when you order online and your not in the province of residence that the store resides, AKA ordering from NCIX from Ontario, you only need to pay for the GST which is 6% an not PST. IF you do reside in British Columbia then yes you do need to pay both. I think that is how it works.

Since Tigerdirect does reside in Ontario, well I can't order from them since I don't use online ordering even if I did though you need to pay both, I just go to their B&M outlet in Markham.

I would have to pay both GST & PST which amounts to 14% in Ontario thanks to the reduction made by the new Conservative government.

Well if your living in Ontario, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia you pay 14% taxes.

If your in P.E.I you pay 16.6% taxes.
If your in Quebec you pay 13.95% taxes.

British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba pays 13%.

and finally Alberta the lucky one you pay 6% G.S.T only. :)

Well it depends if your ordering online and your in not in the province the store is situatated, you don't need to pay P.S.T. Only G.S.T. Worthless for me for Tigerdirect, useful for NCIX.

I know all this - my 15% number was a rough estimate of what most Canadians pay - there are numbers both higher and lower than that - you can adjust that estimate to 14% after Harper slashed 1 point off GST but it doesn't change much.

I'd be one of the first people to admit newegg doesn't have the cheapest prices....particularly on memory -- to me they are always expensive on memory.

But they are still one of my favorite one stop shop stores for my system building needs...I've used them for about 5 years now, built a few systems all from new egg purchased parts. Like any store on the 'net you will ALWAYS find people on fire against the place...its the 'net for crying out loud there will ALWAYS be folks pissed at every store.

To me personally, I don't find them the most expensive - I think largely they are fairly priced (note: I NEVER am an early adopter of new tech either...I always wait a couple months for prices to drop before I buy...in short I think early adopters are silly..why in the world spend money you don't have to...just for bragging rights...but that's another post) and they have ALWAYS given me excellent service.

Call me old fashioned, but if your company is fair, and delivers great service -- I'll tolerate your prices not being the cheapest around...so long as they aren't the most expensive around either.

I'm surprised e-tailers haven't adopted a kind of dynamic pricing where price tends to infinity as stock tends to zero, automatically according to some formula. Then they'd never *really* be out of stock because the last one would cost an absurd amount...

Wonderful idea, I like it very much! Start from MSRP and exponentially increase the price as stock goes to zero - woot! Those stupid e-tailers could make a LOT more of money this way - let the early adopter win - I vote for newegg! Let's hope they do that first.

... who have money to burn. Question is, does this drive down the price of the older Pentium D offerings, or are they just merely replacing them?

I have a co-worker who seems dead-set on getting a new Dell like yesterday... it's hard to tell, however, whether these C2D boxes are just for strictly high-end rigs or if the D's will be dropped in price, dropped altogether, or continued to be sold.

What seems to be the case here with system builders?

I just bought a Dell Dimension 9200 this morning for $679 + $50 Updrage to an E6400. Thanks to a typo on their small business site I got a Core Duo 2.13GHz, 1GB of DDR2 @ 667MHz, 320GB SATA2 AND a Dell 20.1" LCD. Actual price would have been $1,674 + $50 upgrade. Not bad almost a grand off! Needless to say the "glitch" was fixed shortly there after...

Really? That's interesting, to the best of my knowledge brick and mortar stores are required to do so. Then again I beleive that such laws are usually state laws, so I could see how they get around it.

By johnsonx on 8/2/2006 3:07:58 AM , Rating: 2
There are laws regarding bait-and-switch advertsing tactics. But I think any prosecution of such things would have to show a repeated pattern of such behaviour. I know my local Fry's Electronics almost every week has some sort of typo in their newspaper ad, of which they post a correction on the wall in the store. I doubt anyone has been able to force Fry's to honor the original ad price.

Well you are only partially correct. There are laws against false advertising. But in today's highly competitive marketplace and very litigious (I know my spelling sucks btw..lol) society its extremely rare to catch a store on this. Why? Well all they have to do to get off the hook on false advertising (at least prices wise) is print a simple "Not responsible for typographical errors" disclaimer. Then even if it says a brand new 55" HDTV is $400 instead of $4000, there is NO LAW at all that states they have to honor it.

Most often then not the reason PEOPLE THINK its a law...is because its just good business to do the customer a favor and honor minor prices changes....like if the paper ad says something is $20, but it's really supposed to be $25...its good business to just honor that $20 in the face of a highly angered customer...however they are doing it because they want to please you NOT because the LAW says they must.

By Hypernova on 8/5/2006 9:17:26 AM , Rating: 2
IIRC there was a case in Taiwan where they mislabeled a batch of plasma TVs on web order as $6000TW instead of $60000TW and had to honor it.

It might suprise many how easy it is to miss a zero.

45 states have a sales tax. The five states without general sales taxes are: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon.

Seriously, last night, while completely drunk, I got into a conversation with a duch-elm stricken tree stump, and IT had more insight to the market. We had to disagree on the ATI acquisition, though - stumpy thought AMD didn't have the capitol.

Anyway, are you sure your name isn't spelled "Priks?"

-The OP.

Prik, it seems like the Core 2 Duo launch has your panties in a bunch - why so? This is a GOOD thing. C2D is an excellent product, it drove price cuts across the board on your favorite AMD stock and will hopefully stoke the PC industry for better fortunes.

Your last sentence really makes you look like a dumb ass - read it for yourself again : " Oh wait, some fankids started yapping "wherezzz ourzz little cutiee C2D bohooo I'll tell my mommyyiieee..." - so who gives a duck about those little screwies :-)) Not Intel, I'm sure about that :).."

I've ordered mine

I picked up an almost complete system (no video or sound) for about $920. My E6600 that I pre-ordered was $345 from Monarch. It's supposed to ship in the next week or two. The other parts were from Newegg. I'd hate to see how much these things will be once all of the pre-orders are filled.

That's why I bought (and have in my hands) an OEM E6300 from TigerDirect.. that'll allow me to complete my new computer and definitely suffice until the 6600's become more widely available.

OEM E6300s seem to be popping up everywhere in large numbers in England. I just ordered mine for £125 due in 2 days time. I'm surprised these are the only ones around and in such good quantities.

Probably most people are after the faster ones. I agree though, the cheapest Core 2 Duo's are the best value by far, no need to spend more than a couple hundred bucks on your CPU at this point!

Does anyone know when the Core 2 duo mobile is going to come out?

They have X6800 in stock. Too bad the others show "7-10 day delivery" :(

I'm guessing they are trying to get people to pre-order them without really letting them know? Speaking of which, where are the E6x00 Core 2 Duos? I don't see them in stock yet anywhere online. Are they coming out at the very end of the day pacific time or something? Or is intel going to make everyone who doesn't want to shell out for their most expensive new processor wait a few more days than expected?

HP is also offering the Core 2 duo's

that computer truly looks nice. Not the best video card, but with TV capabilities, it looks like a sweet addition.

Can't wait to see what that goes for. :D

Digital Video Editing test

the Digital Video Editing test was not even for one thing the dell had much faster hard disk system then the rest of the systems and maybe a better video card they also tested the old power mac g5 not the new one with pci-e and quad-core.
