Samsung says we will see Blu-ray devices from them very soon

Samsung has announced that they have completed the technical development of their Blu-ray PC and set top drives. The new Blu-ray drives use a 405nm blue laser as opposed to the 650nm red laser used in today's traditional DVD drives. The shorter wavelength allows Blu-ray drives to read data pits that are only 0.16 microns long. The smaller pit length is one of the reasons why Blu-ray discs can record up 25GB of data on a single layer (50GB for dual-layer discs).

Samsung already demonstrated much of its Blu-ray technology to us at CES 2006.  Hopefully, we will see more details from the company about pricing and availability soon.

I wonder how much this unholy monster of an optical recorder will cost. Im really hoping for HD-DVD to be the next big thing. Im convinced it will be the cheaper of the 2.

i been a HD-DVD fanboy since i read blu-ray has a .1 mm cover layer. then i knew it was doomed :! and that hard coat stuff they talk about for protection which doesn't sound protective atall :! ALL i want is a media disk with 15GB datastorage at which should cost less than a $1 a disk. I think HD-DVD can do that easily :)

HD-DVD has been proven to be cheaper. The media is less expensive than BR, and current DVD production machines can be retrofitted to produce HD disks, where BR requires a new machine. Sony is gonna take a big fall on this one. I was at their dis producing facility recently and asked them about BR. They told me that there is no format war. HD-DVD was never a contender. They are currently expanding their facility with the largest capital influx that plant has ever seen. When asked if they would produce HD-DVD if it became popular enough they said, very emphatically, "NO". They are full bore BR. I would suggest off loading any Sony stock you might have in the next year or so. Betamax showed that they have no idea how to deal with customer demands and competition. Heck look at their recent memory stick SNAFU.

Betamax, Mindisc, UMD.... Wait... Sony would never back a failed format!

I wonder how this thing handles scratches and other imperfections. I mean with a pit size that small if I leave a fingerprint, or just breathe on it the wrong way will it jump around chapters like early DVD players did?

Pirst Fost?

dangit compete with HD-DVD. Forget about BR its to freakn expensive for both the consumer and the manufactorer. HD-DVD has plenty of capacity for HD DVD's. I really hope HD-DVD wins but we will see.
