Microsoft releases Windows drivers for the Xbox One controller

Here’s a nice Thursday treat for Xbox One users that also happen to game on desktop PCs as well (or for those that just want to purchase an Xbox One controller ONLY for PC use) — Microsoft is now making PC drivers available for the controller.

Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb (aka, Major Nelson) announced the news on his blog, stating, “We know our fans have wanted PC compatibility, and we know they wanted to be able to use the Xbox One controller with the same games and applications they have been playing with using the Xbox 360 controller.”

“We can’t wait for them to play their favorite PC games with what we consider the best controller ever made and we’re excited for fans to experience the improved D-pad, redesigned battery compartment, new comfortable design and offset analog sticks.”

Windows drivers are available to download right now in x86 and x64 form. According to Major Nelson, the controller must be connected to your PC using a microUSB cable.

Would have been nice for the author to let us know if it is compatible with the Xbox360 RF dongle or how exactly it connects...

What, so you can't even use it wirelessly? I'm also not sure if it's implying that's it's backwards compatible with all the games that already support the 360 controller, or if they would have to be updated...

It presents itself as a 360 controller, so yes, it works with anything that already supports the 360 gamepad.
