We've heard this before, but recent developments could speed the process

We just heard over the weekend that Apple and Google have settled their outstanding legal battles that began way back in 2010. Now comes word from The Korea Times that Apple and Samsung are inching closer to settling their patent litigation that spans courtrooms in numerous countries around the world.
"Samsung has recently resumed working-level discussions with Apple and the key issue is how to dismiss all lawsuits,” said unnamed sources familiar with the bilateral talks.

"Today I settled all family business."
The sources add that royalty payments for the patents in question would be the likely remedy for both companies “before reaching a full agreement.”
The most recent court ruling in United States handed Apple a minor victory, with Samsung being ordered to pay $119.6M in damages for infringing on two patents (U.S. Patent Nos. 8,074,172 and 5,946,647). However, the jury also found Apple guilty of infringing on one Samsung patent (U.S. Patent No. 5,579,239) and awarded damages of $158,400.
The truce between Apple and Google give us some hope that this all out patent war in the smartphone realm could soon be over. However, all previous settlement negotiations between Apple and Samsung have failed in the past, so we’re not holding our breath on this report either.

Legal action like this on a corporate level isn't something that you just decide to do one day and file the next. It takes months if not years of lawyers doing their BS thing... By the time Cook took over it was all well underway and couldn't just be stopped. "Oh, nevermind then" isn't much of an option when millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lawyer-hours have been spent on it already, not to mention the court side of it. They had to see it play out. Now, 2 cases have seen the courtroom. The first will be appealed to high hell and likely lose. If not it will be years and year before Samsung pays a cent. The other, Apple won, but got a mere fraction of the 2 billion they asked. It is obviously not going to amount to much and looking clearer and clearer like settling is a better option.

This says it all right here...

"Jobs grew increasingly eager to take Samsung to court and fight. Cook continued counseling patience, arguing that it would be better to have a negotiated resolution than to duke it out with a company of such importance to Apple’s business...... Cook’s caution was shoved aside."

"Why are you kissing Cook's ass?"

Such venom for a Monday... I am just saying he is more level headed than Jobs (hell, even Pirks is more level headed than Jobs). He has said it before that he doesn't like the way they have gone about things with the lawsuits...

"It happens ALL the time in other companies. You drop the lawsuits, plain and simple."

Nothing is "plain and simple", especially in a publicly traded company. Hopefully he does put an end to it. The article the other day ending it with Google/Moto lends hope to that thought. What we have seen recently is that he is willing to bend to pressure where Jobs didn't.

"Probably because I just read the post where you reamed me and called me a wacko. But moving on.."

Awe, come on... No offense meant... I even prefaced it with "you and I are cool. I like and respect you, and agree with most of what you believe (especially in business/financial/free market conversations)" and I never said "wacko"... But you have to admit, you are pretty far right wing extreme. Like I said, I am in the middle, a registered independent and former libertarian... And you get PO'd at me all the time for being way too left. Dood, the only things I am left on at all are gay marriage, abortion, (which I see as civil rights issues) and the misguided notion that we should send 10+ million farm workers back to Mexico and cripple our entire agricultural sector. That and the entire narrow minded fear of brown people that the right seems to have... Other than those few things, I lean mostly right on everything else and STILL I am a lefty to you.
