Despite being a budget model, HTC One mini 2 packs a better front-facing "selfie" camera than the Galaxy S5

Following the leak of renders of the handset earlier this month, HTC Corp. (TPE:2498) this morning officially announced the update to the HTC One mini.  Dubbed the HTC One mini 2 (for some reason HTC lowercases the "mini" bit), the new smartphone drops the 3D camera and packs a lower resolution HD (1280x720 pixels) found in its larger kin, the HTC One M8 (2014).  The dual-LED flash is also dropped.

One feature that is retained from the higher resolution 5 megapixel HD front shooter.  HTC intends to "dominate the selfie market", which it claims accounts for 90 percent of mobile photos in some regions.

It seems questionable that customers would rather have the high-resolution selfies than retaining the slick 3D rear camera for bokeh adjustments or 3D visualization.  But that's the gamble HTC is making.

To be fair it is pretty impressive to see a 5 MP front-facing camera on this budget model as some premium, flagship phones such as the Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (KRX:005930) (KRX:005935) Galaxy S5 only has a 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera.

The phone also features a "tightened" 4.5-inch display and Sense 6.

The launch schedule is:
  • Europe, the Middle East and Africa: June 2014
  • Asia: June 2014
  • North America: ?? (no launch plans announced)
HTC CEO Peter Chou states:

The latest member of the award-winning HTC One family distills the advanced features that have earned it global acclaim, into an elegant, compact handset.  Its size and tapered edges fit perfectly in a hand, pocket or purse, making it look great and feel even better to use. It’s the perfect choice for those who love the iconic design of the HTC One (M8) yet want something more compact.

Much like the Apple, Inc. (AAPL) iPhone, the phone will be offered in darker metal, silver, and gold -- or "Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver, and Amber Gold".

A price point has not yet been officially announced for these regions, but is expected to be in the mid-range/budget end.

See that's what I'm talking about.

"I would love a small phone, but it needs to have (everything a big phone has magically)."

If you want small, you have to compromise. Believe me, you compromise PLENTY with an iPhone.

Sony Z1 Compact.

Snapdragon 800
2GB Ram
SD Slot
20.7MP Camera
Plenty of battery life.
Waterproof

All in the same size of a Moto X.

I hotspot my phone on LTE for around 3 hours per day, send a couple hundred texts, 1-2 phone calls, article browsing, pictures, and still average 40-50% after 15hrs off the charger.

I remember when the Z1 Compact was announced right here on Daily Tech. People said the EXACT same things about it. It's a joke, it doesn't have this, it doesn't have that, why is this this way, why doesn't Android have good small phones!!?? etc etc etc.

I know the Z1 Compact is a damn nice phone. But I'm not the problem here.

Oh Ok, Sony has zero marketing so I wasn't sure if you just didn't know about it...

The Z1 Compact is the answer to pretty much those two people that want big hardware with a small screen. Unfortunately, I don't think it's sold in the US. Another thing, if it's the same size as a Moto X, why not just get a Moto X? Or are you two wanting something physically smaller than the Moto X?

Well, I live in the US and own one. They sell them on Amazon or Newegg and a few other retailers.

In fact I migrated from a Moto X to a Z1 Compact.

I like the Moto X's AMOLED screen better, but the Z1 is easier to use one handed. Its much faster, has expandable storage, better build quality, MUCH better camera, a camera shutter button, is waterproof, better battery life, FM radio, and does MirrorLink.

Sooo... that would be a good reason to get a Z1C over a MotoX. I liked my MotoX, but it just didn't satisfy everything I want out of a daily device.

Thanks for the reply and info about availability of the Z1C. Mirrorlink capability is nice too.

Yea, it actually does full OS mirroring on a 602BT. Plug in the USB cable, wait a couple seconds, and your phone is on your head unit.

Except, it's not small. It's only a bit smaller than the Nexus 5, but it has a much smaller screen.

By today's standards, yes, that IS small.

Are you looking for iPhone dimensions? Curious.

iPhone 5s: 124*59*8 (mm)
Z1C: 127*65*10 (mm)
N5: 138*69*9

So yes, it's small. It's closer to iPhone size than nexus 5 size....

iPhone 5s: 124*59*8=58,528 cu mm
Z1C: 127*65*10=82,550 cu mm
N5: 138*69*9=85,698 cu mm

It's much closer to the N5. Plus, it's probably larger than any other 4.3" screen phone.

Ergononmically speaking, it's closer to an iPhone than a nexus 5. 70mm is pretty wide to use one handed.

The thickness matter much less, and skews the results here.

Apple manages to put a top-end processor in a small phone.

So does Sony and Motorola with the Mini. What of it?

This and the GS4 and 5 mini arent designed to be expensive high end phones in small packages. They are designed to be smaller cheaper versions. Not flagships.

They aren't the only ones who do this though. So I'm not sure what your point is.

Since I know you have some odd brain disorder that makes you unable to understand context, I would like to point out that I'm not personally defending the specs of this phone, or any other phone. That was not my point.

Of course you don't get my point. Not my fault you are lacking in IQ. I'll spell it out. You seem to think you need a large phone to have high-end specs. I pointed out an example that showed you are wrong. Apple doesn't need a large phone to put in a high end processor. There is nothing, other than Apple just being Apple, stopping them from increasing the res without adding to the phone size either.

So know you are saying you are not personally defending the phone, yet your opening statement, the very first post in the replies, was challenging anyone to find a reason not to buy it. The ever famous reclaimer backpedaling again.

You know what, this was perfectly fine until you showed up. Everyone BUT you gets this.

You STILL don't get it, just take a space taxi back to planet iDiot.

I love that you keep bringing that up when we had shook hands THAT day and supposedly buried the hatchet.

My mistake, I assumed I was dealing with a man and not a little boy who holds grudges for months while pretending to accept my apology to my face.

It's very clear he is trying to overcompensate. You have proven him wrong so many times, he is now in "gotcha" mode trying to get you in any way he can. Unfortunately, that leaves him with twisting words and meanings and some pretty wild misinterpretations of plain English... I get the feeling he is just "chomping at the bit" to try and prove you wrong in any way he can. LOL. It's actually quite funny to watch.

The only thing "high end" about the 5/5s was the processor. It still had the 1GB of ram, overrated camera, and less-than-hd display.

I don't consider the iPhone to be a "premium" phone because it doesn't have the same capability (aside from SoC) of what the market bears as "premium".

They can certainly change that, but are still stuck to silly resolutions because of a dumb design decision at the beginning of iOS.

The only thing premium about the iPhone is the price.

And yes, I use an iPhone every day now, I know what I'm talking about all too well.

I honestly don't see what is supposed to be so impressive about the platform. People are just so into being hipsters or being part of the Cult of Mac, they don't seem to care about the device itself.
