Despite being a budget model, HTC One mini 2 packs a better front-facing "selfie" camera than the Galaxy S5

Following the leak of renders of the handset earlier this month, HTC Corp. (TPE:2498) this morning officially announced the update to the HTC One mini.  Dubbed the HTC One mini 2 (for some reason HTC lowercases the "mini" bit), the new smartphone drops the 3D camera and packs a lower resolution HD (1280x720 pixels) found in its larger kin, the HTC One M8 (2014).  The dual-LED flash is also dropped.

One feature that is retained from the higher resolution 5 megapixel HD front shooter.  HTC intends to "dominate the selfie market", which it claims accounts for 90 percent of mobile photos in some regions.

It seems questionable that customers would rather have the high-resolution selfies than retaining the slick 3D rear camera for bokeh adjustments or 3D visualization.  But that's the gamble HTC is making.

To be fair it is pretty impressive to see a 5 MP front-facing camera on this budget model as some premium, flagship phones such as the Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (KRX:005930) (KRX:005935) Galaxy S5 only has a 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera.

The phone also features a "tightened" 4.5-inch display and Sense 6.

The launch schedule is:
  • Europe, the Middle East and Africa: June 2014
  • Asia: June 2014
  • North America: ?? (no launch plans announced)
HTC CEO Peter Chou states:

The latest member of the award-winning HTC One family distills the advanced features that have earned it global acclaim, into an elegant, compact handset.  Its size and tapered edges fit perfectly in a hand, pocket or purse, making it look great and feel even better to use. It’s the perfect choice for those who love the iconic design of the HTC One (M8) yet want something more compact.

Much like the Apple, Inc. (AAPL) iPhone, the phone will be offered in darker metal, silver, and gold -- or "Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver, and Amber Gold".

A price point has not yet been officially announced for these regions, but is expected to be in the mid-range/budget end.

Price.
This is a Moto G LTE with dual band wifi, better camera, NFC and an uber-sexy body. Yet the asking price seems to be 470 euros (that would be just 100 euros less than the One M8).
And also Sense and no updates, but a GPE could fix those.
