Despite being a budget model, HTC One mini 2 packs a better front-facing "selfie" camera than the Galaxy S5

Following the leak of renders of the handset earlier this month, HTC Corp. (TPE:2498) this morning officially announced the update to the HTC One mini.  Dubbed the HTC One mini 2 (for some reason HTC lowercases the "mini" bit), the new smartphone drops the 3D camera and packs a lower resolution HD (1280x720 pixels) found in its larger kin, the HTC One M8 (2014).  The dual-LED flash is also dropped.

One feature that is retained from the higher resolution 5 megapixel HD front shooter.  HTC intends to "dominate the selfie market", which it claims accounts for 90 percent of mobile photos in some regions.

It seems questionable that customers would rather have the high-resolution selfies than retaining the slick 3D rear camera for bokeh adjustments or 3D visualization.  But that's the gamble HTC is making.

HTC One mini 2

To be fair it is pretty impressive to see a 5 MP front-facing camera on this budget model as some premium, flagship phones such as the Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (KRX:005930) (KRX:005935) Galaxy S5 only has a 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera.

The phone also features a "tightened" 4.5-inch display and Sense 6.

HTC One mini

The launch schedule is:
  • Europe, the Middle East and Africa: June 2014
  • Asia: June 2014
  • North America: ?? (no launch plans announced)
HTC CEO Peter Chou states:

The latest member of the award-winning HTC One family distills the advanced features that have earned it global acclaim, into an elegant, compact handset.  Its size and tapered edges fit perfectly in a hand, pocket or purse, making it look great and feel even better to use. It’s the perfect choice for those who love the iconic design of the HTC One (M8) yet want something more compact.

HTC One mini 2

Much like the Apple, Inc. (AAPL) iPhone, the phone will be offered in darker metal, silver, and gold -- or "Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver, and Amber Gold".

A price point has not yet been officially announced for these regions, but is expected to be in the mid-range/budget end.

I can't wait to hear all the reasons why people don't want this phone, while those same people complain about large phones and how they "cant find" a 4"-4.7" class Android phone...

I want to love any "mini" phone I see as I don't need a huge screen and would like a more pocket friendly phone. But they always seem to configure them with weak proc/RAM/storage specs. I would be all over a smaller screen phone with some power. I can't be the only person of this mind.

Unfortunately, when the phone is smaller, so is the battery. The minis pack about 2000mAh, whereas 5"+ flagships pack about 3000. And flagships last about a day, you wouldn't want anything less. And then there's heat. Arstechnica has already proven the frequencies of flagship CPUs are hogwash; they can only be sustained for a couple of minutes because of heat. Now imagine cramming that into an even tighter body.
To be honest, HTC does have a couple models designed around a dual-core, 1.7GHz CPU (there's a dual SIM available, iirc). I believe those are very sweet deals for anyone not wanting software upgrades in the future.

With my usage, I get 5 to 7 days from my LG G2. My Boarder Patrol agent brother gets 2 to 3 from his; further from towers and more GPS usage.

I do take your point on smaller batteries and heat however. My spec complaint isn't limited to CPUs, and is on the bottom of my list of concerns.

My phone's battery is finally starting to die after 5 years of usage in September. I'm down to 13-14 days PER charge. Granted it is a flip phone with no text or web. I use a phone for talking.

Not sure if anyone knew this but the S5 has an emergency battery mode that sets the screen to black and white and turns off pretty much everything. Fully charged, it can go 15 days.

Last years phones have been tested all over the web by dozens and dozens of reviewers. The G2 is absolutely the best of the best in battery life of all smartphones from all makers, Apple, WP, BB, Android, everyone. It is the unanimous winner. Anandtech had a 23.5 hour phone call and one other actually went over 24. Best web browsing battery life too... Best in every category.

That is a lot of different methodology. It doesn't say that you will last 1 or 7 days because its depending on your use, but it does say its the best you can get (at least among the 2013 models).

2300mah is perfectly fine for a Snapdragon 800.

Without sounding like a broken record here, there is an exception to your opinion.

Well, smaller battery does not always equal smaller battery life. The "mini" phones from HTC and Samsung tend to have less powerful and less power hungry screens and chips paired with the decreased battery capacity.

We're really going to need to see actual reviews on this thing before you can say something like "2000mAh instead of 3000; it's going to have much worse battery life!" I'm guessing worse, but not by much (depending on usage).

Well, you're a little confused. I wasn't talking about "this thing", but about what happens when you pair top of the line components with a smaller battery (it's what the original poster seemed to be wanting).
And if you're genuinely interested in battery life, gsmarena.com is full of battery life tests.

I guess I took "the minis" too literally. I thought you meant phones with the word "mini" in the name such as the the ones I referenced. If that's not what you meant, then I guess we're on the same page.

Also, gsmarena does not have a battery life review of the HTC One Mini 2 up, yet.

So would I, which is why I went with a Sony Z1 Compact. I laugh at the people who have to put a TV against their face to get that kind of power in a handset.

I'd check it out if I were you. Battery life is superb, and the performance is great.

If you want small, you have to compromise. Believe me, you compromise PLENTY with an iPhone.

Sony Z1 Compact.

Snapdragon 800
2GB Ram
SD Slot
20.7MP Camera
Plenty of battery life.
Waterproof

All in the same size of a Moto X.

I hotspot my phone on LTE for around 3 hours per day, send a couple hundred texts, 1-2 phone calls, article browsing, pictures, and still average 40-50% after 15hrs off the charger.

I remember when the Z1 Compact was announced right here on Daily Tech. People said the EXACT same things about it. It's a joke, it doesn't have this, it doesn't have that, why is this this way, why doesn't Android have good small phones!!?? etc etc etc.

I know the Z1 Compact is a damn nice phone. But I'm not the problem here.

The Z1 Compact is the answer to pretty much those two people that want big hardware with a small screen. Unfortunately, I don't think it's sold in the US. Another thing, if it's the same size as a Moto X, why not just get a Moto X? Or are you two wanting something physically smaller than the Moto X?

RE: Can't Wait
By EasyC on 5/15/2014 1:08:31 PM , Rating: 2
Well, I live in the US and own one. They sell them on Amazon or Newegg and a few other retailers.

In fact I migrated from a Moto X to a Z1 Compact.

I like the Moto X's AMOLED screen better, but the Z1 is easier to use one handed. Its much faster, has expandable storage, better build quality, MUCH better camera, a camera shutter button, is waterproof, better battery life, FM radio, and does MirrorLink.

Sooo... that would be a good reason to get a Z1C over a MotoX. I liked my MotoX, but it just didn't satisfy everything I want out of a daily device.

iPhone 5s: 124*59*8 (mm)
Z1C: 127*65*10 (mm)
N5: 138*69*9

So yes, it's small. It's closer to iPhone size than nexus 5 size....

RE: Can't Wait
By bug77 on 5/15/2014 1:28:01 PM , Rating: 2
iPhone 5s: 124*59*8=58,528 cu mm
Z1C: 127*65*10=82,550 cu mm
N5: 138*69*9=85,698 cu mm

It's much closer to the N5. Plus, it's probably larger than any other 4.3" screen phone.

Ergononmically speaking, it's closer to an iPhone than a nexus 5. 70mm is pretty wide to use one handed.

The thickness matter much less, and skews the results here.

Of course you don't get my point. Not my fault you are lacking in IQ. I'll spell it out. You seem to think you need a large phone to have high-end specs. I pointed out an example that showed you are wrong. Apple doesn't need a large phone to put in a high end processor. There is nothing, other than Apple just being Apple, stopping them from increasing the res without adding to the phone size either.

So know you are saying you are not personally defending the phone, yet your opening statement, the very first post in the replies, was challenging anyone to find a reason not to buy it. The ever famous reclaimer backpedaling again.

The only thing "high end" about the 5/5s was the processor. It still had the 1GB of ram, overrated camera, and less-than-hd display.

I don't consider the iPhone to be a "premium" phone because it doesn't have the same capability (aside from SoC) of what the market bears as "premium".

They can certainly change that, but are still stuck to silly resolutions because of a dumb design decision at the beginning of iOS.

The only thing premium about the iPhone is the price.

And yes, I use an iPhone every day now, I know what I'm talking about all too well.

I honestly don't see what is supposed to be so impressive about the platform. People are just so into being hipsters or being part of the Cult of Mac, they don't seem to care about the device itself.

Price.
This is a Moto G LTE with dual band wifi, better camera, NFC and an uber-sexy body. Yet the asking price seems to be 470 euros (that would be just 100 euros less than the One M8).
And also Sense and no updates, but a GPE could fix those.

Let's see. There is the low res display, something you argue against vehemently when it is on an Apple or Windows Phone product, but is suddenly fine on an Android device. Then there is the rather dubious value of the defining feature. Who cares about higher res selfies when they are just going to be posted to Facebook and compressed to shit?

I dare you to find where I've ever stated 720p as being "low res" on a 4.5" screen.

I attack Apple for claiming to provide a premium product, yet having LESS than a 720p screen, yes. Don't you think that's a BIG distinction?

I'm bored of this. You know you are purposely taking me out of context in order to slam me on every issue. Time to get a life.

Where did you say that? When you challenged anyone to come up with a reason not to buy it. Then when people did, you got all butt-hurt, as you usually do when someone says anything less than total praise for an Android device.

Cry some more, whine that I am picking on you, whatever. You are the idiot who claimed I don't belong on a tech site because I stated that higher res needs more GPU power. When people are so clearly stupid as you, I can't help but to rub their face in their own stupidity. A character flaw of mine, perhaps. Lets take a look here at your latest nutty rant, just for fun. :P

"You two like it when I was out bashing pro-Apple folks. Only to turn around and call me a traitor when I started bashing Android"

- imaginary scenario you make up in your head - that never happened. Seriously... It never happened. That isn't at all what what said - ever.

"You claim how we should buy the phones we want, when your ulterior motive is really one of "go buy a 5"+ phone and suck it up" regardless of the user's actual needs."

- imaginary scenario you make up in your head - that never happened. Again, for the umpteenth time, no-one was pushing anything. We simply were telling you to stop complaining about large phones. There are plenty smaller ones available, so buy what you want. If next year someone buys an iPhone6 at 5.5 inches or a Note5 at 6.5 inches, it doesn't change your phone or your experience at all. Buy what you want and enjoy what you bought. SIMPLE! Why do you keep complaining about the size of phones that other people want? Deal with it man, be an adult.

"When others voice arguments to the contrary, you immediately brand them luddites and idiots."

- imaginary scenario you make up in your head - that never happened. You were called a luddite because you cant grasp the point of the conversation you are involved in or the fact that other people large phones don't affect your phone at all. It's theirs and your is yours. YOU are the one attacking Apple, and other OEM's for going large when you can still buy a small phone. WTF is so hard to grasp.

Read this part really slow so you can hopefully grasp it... AGAIN THIS NOT AN ARGUMENT ON SMALL VS LARGE PHONES. THIS IS AN ARGUMENT ABOUT YOU NOT ACCEPTING APPLE, AND OTHER OEM'S AND OTHER PEOPLE WHO WANT LARGE PHONES AND YOU ARE GETTING PO'D ABOUT IT. Get it ? Of course not. You didn't get it the first dozen times it was were carefully explained , why would you get it now...

OK, I have to ask. Are really being serious here, or are you just trying to act this way on purpose to pis people off? IF so its not working, I think you are hilarious and am enjoying you getting all bent. I just find it hard to believe that anyone could be so thick headed and take a the complete wrong meaning in every single post. I just cant see how it is possible, yet you keep doing it.

What kind of a nutcase would even say that over the size of phones that OEM's are making? Seriously what is wrong with you?

Your position all along: go buy a 5"+ phone and suck it up.

You spin that position as: go buy whatever phone you want.

Meanwhile, your recent posts on these topics: go buy a 5"+ phone and suck it up.

Now you turn around and claim all of that never happened. LOL, really.

imaginary scenario you make up in your head - that never happened

Keep telling yourself that and you'll believe it eventually.

no-one was pushing anything

Oh man, you're just like Keith Alexander, lying with your eyes wide open.

We simply were telling you to stop complaining about large phones.

Nope, more than that. You're telling me to not only stop complaining about large phones, but also to go out and buy them even when they don't suit my needs.
quote:
There are plenty smaller ones available

I said "small Android flagship phones under 5 inches". There are none. The m8 mini is not a flagship, it's a bastardized, cut-down version marketed as such. You are wrong, sir.
quote:
You were called a luddite because you cant grasp the point of the conversation you are involved in

You called me a luddite because you cannot stand the fact that I don't want to buy the large phones that you keep raving about. Too easy.
quote:
YOU are the one attacking Apple, and other OEM's for going large when you can still buy a small phone.

Congrats for putting your words in my mouth, sir. Sorry, that's not what I said.
quote:
You didn't get it the first dozen times it was were carefully explained

Not only did you not explain it, your explanations are as clear as mud.

"Go buy your small phones, dude!" Hah, funny, considering your position all along has been "go buy a 5"+ phone and suck it up", while pretending you're somehow less fanboyish and biased than others.
quote:
Are really being serious here, or are you just trying to act this way on purpose to pis people off?

Your position is I'm not allowed to have my opinions about wanting a small flagship phone here, because they conflict with your position that large phones are better than small ones and we should all buy large phones. Besides your refusal to back down on that stance while claiming to be impartial.

How about "no"? Nope, you can't take that as an answer either.

If you think I'm here to post like that retard Reclaimer77, you are sorely mistaken.

You are absolutely insane. How you could get those meaning above from what I said is beyond my comprehension... But please if you think you can find it, quote me and show the links you lying sack. Hey, there is no edit button here at this site, so you shouldn't have a problem if I said any of that eh? No, things were said exactly as I outlined above and you took absolutely insane meanings from them, but pelase, show me where I said any of it. Any at all.

LOL.

I don't see how 720p can be considered low res on a phone. Yes it is lower than the 1080p and 1440p standards that the Android arms race has cause people to think they want. I would like to put my hands on one of these to see if it could be for me.

Paired with a nice dual core processor the smaller battery could be just fine.

Actually, the specs look ok, and the screen resolution is good enough.
But I doubt it comes with a replaceable battery or an SD slot, so I wouldn't buy it for those reasons.

MicroSD- yes, battery- probably not. Although if I had to choose between the two I'd take the SD slot for obvious reasons (i.e. add media to the library and be able to go out right away without waiting for the device to hit full charge).
