Apple to reportedly finally get with the program when it comes to heavy multitasking
iPad was first announced
, many in the tech industry mocked it. Some jokingly referring to it as a "Maxipad," others decried that it was simply a supersized iPod touch, and many saw the iPad as simply a "consumption" device. Over the past four years, the iPad has gone on to be a huge success for Apple, but there have still been lingering questions about the usefulness of the device for people that actually want to do “real work.”
Both Microsoft and Samsung have attacked the iPads lack of split-screen multitasking (i.e. using two apps side by side) in their TV advertising:

is reporting that Apple may finally be adding split-screen multitasking to its iPad family in iOS 8. As with competing tablets, this new functionality would allow iPads users to use two apps at once, side by side.

For example, a user may be able to drag content, such as text, video, or images, from one app to another. Apple is said to be developing capabilities for developers to be able to design their apps to interact with each other. This functionality may mean that Apple is finally ready to enable “XPC” support in iOS (or improved inter-app communication), which means that developers could design App Store apps that could share content.
9.7” iPad Air
has plenty of screen real estate to make split-screen multitasking viable. Split-screen multitasking on

with its smaller 7.9” screen might be a tad bit harder to pull off in the real world, but it’s not impossible.
We’ll hear more about iOS 8 at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC 14) when it kicks off on June 2.

You must not know many parents then. Our tablets get shared among the family.

Exactly. My daughter tends to use the tablet a lot. The multi-user is definitely a must so my daughter can't accidentally order stuff from Google Play via my account. I also don't have to see all of her games apps cluttering my app screen.

The email app also doesn't have the ability to require a password, which is a problem multiple users would also fix.
