New technologies from the likes of Samsung and Nokia will be put to the test

NTT Docomo Inc. (TYO:9437) -- Japan's largest wireless carrier -- this week announced its plans for fifth generation (5G) wireless data technology trials in Japan.  It hopes to bump speeds up roughly 1,000 fold over standard 4G LTE speeds, hitting speeds as high as 10 Gbps.
 
To get that kind of performance, it's testing new technologies like machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and dense base station coordination.  The 5G tests will examine the performance of several higher frequency bands, including the 28 GHz and 70 GHz bands, regimes sometimes referred to as "millimeter wave" technologies.
 
NTT Docomo is teaming up with six top telecommunications equipment makers, including -- Nokia Oyj. (HEX:NOK1V), Alcatel Lucent SA(EPA:ALU), Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (KRX:005930) (KRX:005935), Ericsson AB (STO:ERIC.A) (STO:ERIC.B), NEC Corp. (TYO:6701), and Fujitsu, Ltd. (TYO:6702).

5G studies are starting to gain real momentum as we point toward 2020.  I am delighted that we will collaborate on 5G experimental trials with multiple global vendors from this early stage.

The first tests will start later this year and will be done indoors at the Docomo R&D Center in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.  Next year outdoor field tests will begin in Japan.

Similar 5G tech tests are ongoing in London, UK.  "5G" technology is expected to begin standardization in 2016.

I think caps are also due to limitations of technology. Cell towers don't have anywhere near the capacity to offer everyone within their range the advertised speed if everyone had unlimited data. The cap significantly reduces usage as people conserve, allowing towers to service fewer people but with higher quality speeds. Towers are expensive to put up, not just hardware and labor but also land and politics. In this light, higher bandwidth towers can only help to increase caps by being able to service more people at good speeds.
