Amazon's new smartphone will feature a 3D interface and "Prime Data"

Boy Genius Report first brought some detailed information on Amazon’s upcoming smartphone offering in mid-April. The smartphone is supposed to feature an innovative 3D interface, a “forked” version of Android (a la the Kindle Fire tablet family), a Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a “lowly” 4.7” 720p display.

Today, BGR is once again dishing out some fresh details Amazon’s smartphone included some 3D renders of that the final product will look like. The smartphone market is relatively mature at this point, so the actual physical design of the device breaks no new ground and looks about par for the course when it comes to Android-based smartphones.

In addition to the new look at what the smartphone will look in its final form, BGR says that it will come with “Prime Data”. Prime Data appears to be a data plan for the smartphone that is being offered exclusively through AT&T’s wireless service network. More importantly, it appears to be tied to AT&T’s Sponsored Data program that was initiated back in January of this year.

With the rounded edges, it looks nothing like an iPhone.

Why Android? Because Amazon already went through the trouble to fork it for their Fire tablets. As much as I am a proponent of Windows Phone, it makes no sense for Amazon, who wants this to be another device tied to their content store.

Which means you have to go through all the effort to turn it back to an AOSP android rom.

Why would you? I am assuming that if you buy this, it is because you want to be in the Amazon ecosystem.

People buying this won't do that. They'd get it because they want Amazon apps and they don't make those for Android, just their own Kindle products and iOS.

The camfer of the edges is different I agree but you would have to be blind not to see an iphone resemblance. It almost looks like an iphone4 with a black bumper installed. I mean pretty much all phones are just rectangles with predominantly screen on the face. But the flat back and simular corner radius makes this thing look a lot like an iphone.

There are two damn phones in the picture. The first looks much like an iPhone. The second looks much like an iPhone4.

Neither is an especially interesting statement since pretty much every damn phone that ships these days looks like an iPhone. The only differences are screen size or the rare weirdness like the Samsung Galaxy K super lens.

It is front and back pics of the same phone. It looks like an iPhone in that it has a screen and is rectangular. That is about it.
