Pair of updates is expected in Q3 and Q4 for Windows Phone 8.1

Some of you may have reacted with incredulity to HTC Corp.'s (TPE:2498) recent chat about the importance of the self-portrait -- better known in the smartphone era as the "selfie".  Indeed, according to HTC's internal statistics -- which it did not clearly explain the methodology of -- up to 90 percent of smartphone photos in some regions are self-portraits with the front-facing camera.  (The term "selfie" can also refer to group shots taken with the front-facing camera.)

But love the selfie or hate it, HTC is not the only phonemaker obsessed with delivering the perfect selfie.  According to a new report by The Verge, Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) recently-acquired smartphone unit is planning a Nokia Lumia that will take aim at producing the best selfie around.  Dubbed "Superman" the device is expected to launch in H2 2013, and match the 2014 HTC One (M8) with a 5 megapixel-front facing camera.

The Lumia Superman phone is expected to pack a 4.7-inch screen and otherwise a mid-range spec.

Apparently Superman loves a good selfie?  Microsoft thinks so, at least.

Before Superman, The Verge's sources say to expect a trio of Windows Phones in July, alongside the first major update to Windows Phone 8.1.  Windows Phone 8.1 is currently being tested by developers and will be fully released next month to the public.

The first update is expected to bring off-the-glass touchless proximity gesture features similar to the Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd.'s (KRX:005930) (KRX:005935) Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5 smartphones.  The device that showcases this technology -- codenamed "Goldfinger" -- and the Windows Phone firmware behind it weren't quite ready for primetime in April so Microsoft bumped them till July.

This follows in line with Windows Phone 8, which also received a major update and a device refresh in July 2013.  There are rumored to be two other devices alongside Goldfinger; Lumia fans expect one of these devices may be the Lumia 1030, the upgrade to last year's super-shooter.

The second update and device refresh (including the "Superman" selfie-focused phone) will like be scheduled for sometime in Q4 2014, perhaps in October.
