Shazam integration expected with iOS 8
A report has surfaced that Apple is set to add a new song discovery feature in a future update for iOS. Sources that claim to be familiar with Apple's plans say that
will power the song-discovery feature.
The microphone of an iPhone or iPad would be used to capture audio of the song and then the audio would be compared to the song database of the program.
Song discovery would be baked directly into iOS and will be available through
. The user being able to hit the Home button and ask what song is playing.
Another report indicates that Apple is looking at making iTunes Radio a standalone app rather than a feature inside the iTunes store. However, the source says that the final decision on that move hasn't been made.
Shazam currently has over
420 million users worldwide
that use its services.

RE: Google Now

FYI, Siri is an app which records audio, sends it to Apple's server, and the server processes it and returns an appropriate response. None of the heavy lifting is done in iOS. It's basically a glorified microphone app.
Shazam and Google Now's music recognition work the same way. They record the music, send it back to a server which does the processing and searching, and sends the result back to your phone. Again, glorified microphone app.
But part of Google Now actually runs on your phone. I was surprised to discover that - I thought only the Moto X had voice-recognition built into the phone. But my Nexus 5's contact list voice search and voice dial still work if I turn off wifi and 3G/4G data.
