Toyota's Camry gets all emotional

Toyota introduced its current generation Camry nearly three years ago. In keeping with Camry tradition, the styling of the vehicle was decidedly mainstream or to put it more bluntly: boring. Toyota’s decision to stay conservative with its styling hasn’t made the Camry lose its sales crown, but more stylish rivals like the Ford Fusion are eating into Camry sales.
In a rather drastic move to keep its dominant sales position, Toyota has made a pretty drastic mid-cycle redesign of its Camry to inject some more “emotion” into its design. Every body panel has been changed (save for the roof) and the overall effect is quite pleasant (we still can’t get past the ugly, black plastic C-pillar treatment near the rear windows).

The new exterior is the biggest change, but Toyota has also made a few technological changes to the 2015 Camry. The vehicles gets LED daytime running lights in all trim levels, and LED low- and high-beam headlights will be an available option. A new 4.2” color TFT information screen is now nestled between the two primary speedometer/tach gauges in SE, XLE and XSE models. The 2015 Camry will also offer Lane Departure Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System with Auto High Beams, and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert technologies.

One of the newest editions to the Camry lineup is the new Hybrid SE model. Toyota says that 45 percent of Camry buyers choose the “sporty” SE model, so it’s extended that trim to the hybrid. So buyers can get all the benefits of the Camry’s hybrid powertrain in addition to larger 18” wheels, unique front fascia, and stiffer suspension. However, it’s still a Camry, so don’t expect to hang with a Mazda 6 when the road gets twisty.

The powertrain in the Camry SE Hybrid is a carryover from the previous model year, so that means that you’ll see 40 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 40 mpg combined.

Yeah that's fair, tell Subaru they need to make a ~$35k car on par with that list?

Come on, don't be an elitist. Subaru's are fun to drive and a great value.

Amen! I knew I couldn't be the only Subbie lover around here.

I'm concerned for the future of the STI though. I believe Subaru is starting to price them out of the market. Especially considering how they continue to make the WRX so compelling, it's almost hard to justify the increased price for the STI.

When I bought my STI in '05, there was a huge gap between the performance of it and the WRX. Today that's not the case.

That's why I have a WRX. I couldn't justify the added cost of an STI. I'm just as fast 0-60, if not faster since I'm not loaded up with all the heavier suspension parts and bigger brakes. Didn't plan on tracking my commuter car, either. If you're gonna take these cars to a track, sure, get the STI.

With a simple OTC ECU tune and a downpipe, you're faster than almost anything on the road with all that HP going straight to the road.

It's stupid to compare stock to modified because any car can be modded. I'm not concerned with modded cars, if I were, I would just keep my present car and mod it. LOL! I want fantastic OUT OF THE BOX, no mods required.

Modded as in a flashed ECU and nothing else. I don't really consider that a MODDED car. As is, it's already fantastic from the factory. So there's no argument here.

You can also get a 420 HP Mustang GT for $31k vs the 308HP $35k STI now. STI used to command a good price/performance lead but now there are some other decent options.

420 HP on a wrong-wheel-drive non-turbo car is a lot different than 308 HP with 18lbs of boost straight to the road - you're not gonna be wasting all that HP spinning tires and trying to keep your car in a straight line...

You're paying for a track ready car with the STI, not a generic go fast that everybody and their mother drives.

Not being an elitist Rec, just tired of driving compromised cars that others say are really good (for example the Miata) and when you drive them, they're no where near the good stuff (did I mention the Miata?). I've seen video's on the new STi and they all say it's WAY different (better) than the old one. There was a lot of chassis work done on the new car apparently. I haven't driven one though so the jury's is still out.

Hey I respect that. But obviously if you want a perfect car out of the box with zero compromises, you're going to pay a LOT more than what Subaru is charging for vehicles.

I make good money, but I'm over that age where spending craptons of cash on a car is something I fantasize about.

Subaru gives me legendary reliability, practicality, and a lot of fun-factor when I need it. That works for me.

Of course...I hit my mid-life crisis in a few years, so check back with me on that whole shpeal about value for money lol. A GT-R might be in my future!:P

p.s Miata has always been overrated. Always.
