It will fill in the spots radar can't reach

After a recent missing Malaysian Airlines flight, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has decided to mandate GPS-based aircraft tracking on planes. 

According to 9 News, the FAA will require that all planes have a GPS tracking system called Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) radio network by 2020. 

ADS-B allows controllers to monitor an aircraft using GPS satellite tracking instead of current ground-based radar. The problem with radar is that it doesn't cover some spots around the world, and ADS-B will make sure those particular spots are accounted for (as well as everywhere else around the globe). 

 
Currently, only 100 of the 230 air traffic facilities across the country use ADS-B. But by 2020, all will be onboard. The U.S. already has the ground stations in place for their use, so now it's just a matter of equipping planes with the system. 

In addition to tracking planes, the new system will also provide pilots with more accurate, real time information, like weather, when in flight.

This one seems like a no brainer and it should be used to help coordinate air traffic control.

The problem is, the FAA imposes these rules, but doesn't provide the funds to implement them. No wonder the cost of an airplane is so high. Sounds to me like another knee-jerk reaction because 'we have to do something'. Another expensive solution in search of a problem. It's easy to pass laws if you don't bear the burden.

I remember when they came out with a requirement that all planes had to have 121.5 MHz emergency locater transmitters installed. Now, they aren't even going to monitor that frequency.

Also, how would you feel if the police were recording your position every time you drove your car (I'm sure it's the next step).

Police recording your vehicle's position is clearly the same as requiring GPS on flights.

Yup, no difference at all.

I was in flight school for Airline Transport and the instructor told me the reason why stuff like this in place is because someone died. Every single one is because someone died like the beacons on top of tall buildings that flash bright.

"Currently, ELTs are required to be installed in almost all U.S.-registered civil aircraft, including general aviation aircraft, as a result of a congressional mandate. The mandate resulted from the 1972 loss of U.S. Representative Hale Boggs and Nick Begich in Alaska after their aircraft crashed and was never found."

So, let's require EVERY aircraft to have an ELT, "with the current cost around $1,000 or more per unit, not including installation". While we're at it, let't mandate life rafts too. And, make everybody wear parachutes and survival suits.

121.5 was selected because it was the best technology of the time. Now, with satellites, the new 406 ELT sends a signal to a Sat and the location can be narrowed to less than a 1/2 mile and notification takes place much quicker. It is good technology but yes, a newer expense. BUT, less expense should hopefully be spent on searches.
