Yahoo wants four original comedy shows tips source

Last week we heard that Yahoo was looking to compete against YouTube in the streaming video market. That announcement puzzled a lot of people since Google has admitted that it has been unable to sufficiently monetize YouTube.
 
According to a source familiar with the plans, Yahoo is close to ordering four new original web series that will all be 10-episode, half-hour comedy shows. The source tips that a budget for each of the shows would be in the area of $700,000 to $1 million per episode.
 
Yahoo isn’t looking for content from unknowns; it wants content from directors and writers that have TV experience. A source said that, "They want to blow it out big time."
 
This move makes it sound like Yahoo wants to compete with Netflix and Amazon more than YouTube. Perhaps Yahoo has a Netflix-style video service in mind that would be free to use like YouTube. If the shows are top notch, a free streaming video offering with original shows might be interesting.
 
CEO Marissa Mayer is said to want to show off the new TV quality content on April 28 at an event called NewFront. Yahoo clearly thinks that a spate of original programs will help lure viewers to whatever video service it buys or launches. That could hold true, only if the shows are good.

Same reason why Comcast bought into NBC. Without content your just a pipe.

Also contracts keep content from many providers.

Therefore, come up with your own content.
