AMD's official pricing outlined on the AMD website
Value pricing on all AMD products

AMD has officially cut prices on its product lineup. The price cuts are in line of what DailyTech previously reported. AMD’s flagship Athlon 64 FX-62 has dropped down to $827 while the high-end Athlon 64 X2 5000+ is priced at a more affordable $310. Also previously reported, the Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and 4800+ for Socket 939 and AM2 platforms have been discontinued. This leaves AMD with 11 dual-core products.

AMD’s single-core product lineup is left with seven models with the Athlon 64 3800+, 3500+ and 3200+ in Socket AM2, 939 and energy efficient configurations. Most of the Sempron desktop lineup has fallen below the $100 mark, with the exception of the Sempron 3600+ which is $101.

This will be AMD’s only desktop price cut for the next couple of months.

I have gone to New Egg, Price Watch and Tiger Direct and I and I still see the old prices. I am speculating that they are trying to clear their old inventory.

NCIX is showing the prices if you look for them.

Why did AMD discontinue the 4800+ I was planning on grabbing one once the prices fell?

RE: Can't find it
By EPAstor on 7/24/2006 10:24:06 AM , Rating: 2
Because the 4800+ was the same speed as the 4600+, but with more cache - and performance gains were very small. AMD's production capacity is limited, and more cache eats up more die space - so they couldn't afford to keep producing high-cache chips when they could instead reorganize to produce more lower-cache chips (which perform near-identically).

Monarch has the X2 4800 for $345 but it is showing on backorder. Does the increased cache make it worth the price over the X2 4600 for $ 259.99?

Depending on what you do it can make around a 5% difference, but don't quote me on that. I am a little rusty in that area. I would get the higher clock if it were me; if I had the money.

Monarch dropped the prices over the weekend sometime. I managed to find it early enough so I was able to purchase the X2 4800 for $320. Looks like they raised the price today due to extremely high demand.

In fact NCIX sent a mail on Sunday(!!) with new pricing! I have never EVER saw them do that in 10 years I shop with them. I almost fell off my chair when I saw 3800+ pricing. I paid $600+ on 4400+ this time last year as my unprecedented high-end processor purchase. But that one is "finally" becoming midrange now (perhaps even lower midrange) with Conroe officially going on sale.

This morning, Monarch Computer Systems had the AMD X2 4600+ S939 for $259.99. While I did not check the rest of Monarch's processor prices, I suspect that Monarch currently offers AMD's new processor pricing.

ZipZoomFly now has some on both the Intel and AMD side.

the 4200+, 4600+ AM2 are closer to the AMD listed prices as well as the 940 and 950 for Intel's Pentium D line, as well as the Sempron 2800+ & 3000+ AM2

Anyone know when NewEgg drops their prices? I'm waiting on it to get myself a 3800+ X2 for Socket AM2.

I just did a customer service live chat at NewEgg and the customer service rep wasn't able to give me any information on when the site would be updated - time or date for that matter. She said that she had already prodded the marketing dept. about it.

That's all I know. Anyone else know anything?

And to think a X2 3800+ was $300 USD only a day ago... Quite an attractive price indeed for that 5000+, but (and I really don't want to start any flame wars), to state the obvious, an E6600 Conroe is in that price range at $316 USD and the better performer. HOWEVER, motherboard prices will play a huge factor in many people's decisions on upgrading, especially considering every 975X mobo I've seen is in the $250+ range. Oh, well, I personally will still be going Conroe, ahem, Core 2 Duo as my 2.4c Northwood is rather long in the tooth (I don't game on my PC much at all, so don't rag on me:) Oh, and the overclocking potential on the C2D's... an absolute thing of beauty it's going to be when I upgrade.

RE: Wow...
By BladeVenom on 7/24/2006 7:57:20 AM , Rating: 2
Well, an overclocked 2.4 Northwood is still good enough for gaming. No games require dual core, only a couple take advantage of dual core, and I don't even think they recommend you have a dual core. No one really needs a new expensive processors for gaming.

> "You're so wrong!"

Bill Gates may not have said that, but I recall one editor of a major computer magazine who was actually angry about personal computers shipping with 64K (not 640K) of RAM. He felt that any and all programs could be written in 48K, and thus the 'extra' memory would just lead to code bloat.

RE: X2 3800+ on 939 discontinued too?
By Ard on 7/24/2006 6:20:29 AM , Rating: 3
The 3800+ is still there, priced at $152 and $176 for the normal/EE models respectively What you probably saw was the EESMF 3800+, which doesn't have a price listed. The chart mentions that distributors should be contacted for those prices, which sounds like they may be OEM only chips.

By kirbalo on 7/24/2006 9:52:27 AM , Rating: 3
They're just allowing for "Market Pricing" similar to the S939 Opterons a few months ago when they were "removed" and replaced with (***)...this allows the disty. to set the market price based on demand...which should be high for the 35W parts...

Those prices are all $20-35 higher than what was written on the AMD chart you posted last week. Was the previous one fake or did AMD just not lower the prices quite as much as originally planned?

We posted distributor prices. These are retail prices. AMD authorized resellers are allowed to sell below the retail prices but not below the distributor prices, which is what typically happens.

RE: Not In Stock
By Chernobyl68 on 7/24/2006 6:35:57 PM , Rating: 2
Well, they didn't pay the lower price to buy the chips, so they're kind of hurting existing stock...these price drops might result in them being sold for less than they actually bought them for.

Lower prices on CPU's and the newly bought ATI can only make times better for this big player now.

Considering AMD is now owner of One of the best GPU makers in the world, what will happen between Intel and nVidia?? - if anything.
