He isn't sure how long he'll keep his seat on the board

Steve Ballmer may have stepped down as Microsoft's CEO, but he isn't going anywhere just yet.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Ballmer isn't sure how long he'll stay as a director on Microsoft's board, but he's in the process of figuring out what to do next.

“It really as much as anything depends on how I see rest of my life playing out,” said Ballmer, referring to how long he'll stay on the board. “I get to find some new set of things to be passionate about. I’m going to take some time and really figure it out.”

Ballmer decided to keep his board seat after stepping down as the company's CEO -- a role he held for 14 years.

Ballmer joined Microsoft on June 11, 1980 as the company's 30th employee and the first business manager hired by Microsoft Chairman and Co-Founder Bill Gates. He has about 4 percent of Microsoft’s stock valued at more than $13 billion USD.

Ballmer announced last August that he planned to retire sometime within a year's time. In January, Satya Nadella became the new CEO of Microsoft.

Ballmer recently added that board meetings are much different now, and that Nadella seems to be living up to expectations.

“I didn’t talk like I did when I was CEO,’’ said Ballmer, referring to the March board meeting. “Satya is doing a great job.’’
