Update 10 was installed this morning
SimCity gamers got the news of
an offline option
back in January, and today, that mode is finally available.
, Update 10 with Offline Play was installed at 6 a.m. PDT this morning. This resulted in some server downtime, but they were up and running again at 10 a.m. PDT.

In Update 10, SimCity gamers can now log into their cities with all of the previously downloaded content available to them. The online game remains the same, but there will now be a single player mode that allows you to play offline on your own. This means gamers can just save and load the game instead of using the cloud auto-saving feature.
This is great news for SimCity gamers that have asked for an offline option ever since Electronic Arts (EA) released the
game in 2013

RE: City areas too small

An hour? You made it 50 minutes longer than I could. I played SimCity, 2K, and 4 (never had a CPU to play 3K until 4 came out). 4 added features I dreamed of in 2K, though I did not have the time to enjoy it as much.
The previews I saw showed a solo sandbox game transformed into a social MMO game. When I want social, I have real life, face to face, in range of hugs, high fives, and occasional punches.
Sure NOW you can play 5 offline, but the point is the essence of the game is still MMO and the game was designed to be MMO.
Probably the city size limitation you're talking about is because they feared too many people online with large cities. Yet they don't want to increase city size offline only or people wouldn't play online as much. By making it online they want to hook people online, even if they're just being social. Message boards and conversations are recorded for their marketing purposes. Fixing AI problems would mean more time enjoying the game than chatting. They really screwed the pooch.
It makes you wonder how they ever made money when they just sold you a box with media and manual.
