The fourth generation iPad returns to lineup at Apple
first introduced the iPad 2 just over three years ago
, which makes it quite ancient in today’s fast-paced tech world. However, Apple has continued to sell the device as one of its entry-level tablets with a price tag of $399.
Today, Apple is finally kicking the iPad 2 (with its non-Retina display and older 30-pin dock connector) to the curb in favor of the
fourth generation iPad with Retina Display
. The $399 price and 16GB capacity remain, but you get a faster A6X processor (instead of the older A5), Retina display (obviously) and the Lightning Dock connector.
“Now for $399 customers can get iPad with a stunning 9.7-inch Retina display, fast A6X chip, and 5MP iSight camera, offering a dramatic upgrade in power, performance and value compared to the iPad 2 it replaces,” said Apple's Philip Schiller. “The iPad line sets the gold-standard in mobile computing and all iPads have access to the largest and best ecosystem of more than 500,000 iPad optimized apps from the App Store.”
If users prefer to have a cellular connection, you can also opt to add LTE connectivity for an additional $130.
Both the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi+LTE models are currently available from the

The issue is more of an annoyance that the latest and greatest was replaced so quickly. A lot of people would have waited for the 4th generation if they knew that it would be released a lot sooner than the rest of Apple's product cycles.

So its not really about what it does and it's performance, its just not "the latest and greatest" ? Sounds pretty petty TBH...
That is pretty much true of any tech, if you want to wait for the next thing to come out before buying you will never buy anything because something better is always on the way. The next new model doesn't take anything away from the old, it still has the same specs and works the same way it did prior to the new release.

Apple has an established pattern of iPad releases. They broke it with the iPad 3 and only the iPad 3. For me it's nothing to do with latest and greatest, but otherwise the post above is correct. They should never have released a product they weren't happy with. Have any of you people defending it actually used one? Even the Anandtech review noted that it just barely had the throughput to drive the display. Nobody else finds it suspicious that it was replaced only eight months after release? Name another product that has happened to, especially an Apple one.
