Microsoft officially launches its 64GB, LTE Surface 2
We reported last week that Microsoft had plans to introduce an LTE version of its
underdog Surface 2 tablet
. Today, Microsoft confirmed those plans, and officially announced the 64GB tablet that is currently tied to AT&T’s LTE network.
According to Panos Panay, Corporate VP for Microsoft Surface, LTE connectivity has been a much-requested addition to the Surface 2. “Many of you have told me that you’d like the capability to be online, even when Wi-Fi isn’t available, so you can work, play, share, and communicate wherever you are,” said Panos in a blog post.
“In simple terms, we are CONTINUOUSLY being asked for a Surface that allows you to use mobile broadband.”
As previously reported, the LTE version of the Surface 2 commands a $130 price premium over its W-Fi-only sibling, making for a price tag of $679.
Microsoft says that its latest tablet will be available starting March 18 from Best Buy/
and Microsoft Retail Stores/

Battery life on ARM and x86 variants of Surface hasn't had the displeasure of reflecting an LTE connection thus far.
As such, yes, MS has gotten battery life numbers on Surface 2 and Pro 2 to good ranges, but I am somewhat pessimistic as to what those numbers will look like when feeding power to a dedicated LTE modem and its usage starts being put in par with phone and tablets also doing the same.
I think ARM is going to continue to thrive exactly where it has: the low-power realm.
ARM has enough entrenchment in markets begging for power-efficiency where if Intel cannot reduce the gap in this unit of measure by several magnitudes even still, the RT version of Windows continues to have a purpose form the company's perspective. It already has the RT OS, I'd be surprised to see it altogether discontinued as of Win9. Maybe afterwards if ARM power efficiency gains dip AND Intel keeps winning gains.
I do think the WP OS is going to be folded into the Surface / WinRT tablet OS though. My last understanding was that these two OSes continue to be distinct implementations as of the latest released versions of the respective platforms. Having both is just... unnecessary...
