Sony won by nearly 30,000 sales

Sony's PlayStation 4 pulled out another monthy sales win over Microsoft's Xbox One, although the gap is starting to narrow.

According to Xbox Wire, Microsoft sold 258,000 Xbox One consoles for the month of February. However, Sony sold around 287,000 PlayStation 4s according to market researchers NPD Group.

Overall hardware sales rose 42 percent year over year and 44 percent month over month. The top-selling games for February were "Call of Duty: Ghosts," "The Lego Movie Videogame," "NBA 2K14," "Thief" and "Grand Theft Auto V."

The PS4 ended up outselling the Xbox One in January as well, where journalist Geoff Keighley -- who spoke with PlayStation SVP Guy Longworth -- said PS4 sales in January nearly doubled the "nearest next gen competitor," which points to the Xbox One.

But the Xbox One was December 2013's winner with 908,000 consoles sold.

In mid-February, it was reported that Sony had sold 5.3 million PS4s globally since launch.

Sales of both consoles are being watched very closely, since many believe the months after the holiday season are more telling of which console wins the race rather than the November-December period, when everyone is spending anyway.

Both Microsoft and Sony released their respective consoles a week apart in November 2013, just in time for the holiday season.

Titanfall isn't the game changer people make it out to be. Most people aren't going to shell out over $500 to play a game on a system they didn't want beforehand.

Yup.. I want Titanfall bad, but not bad enough to buy an XBO. I will wait. Respawn has already announced the next one will be available on PS4.

I know, but I have really become accustomed to gaming on hte PS4... It's the controller that wins it. That and I have had a PS3 for gaming for sevearl years and havent upgraded my video card... I know, I know, PC master race. I have been gaming on PC since Doom, upgrading constantly, to the point even I thought I had issues. I am over it.

That's reasonable. It gets expensive to maintain a PC with good enough specs to run the games at quality settings. I am a bit surprised though that the controller, of all things, was what won it out for you. You prefer it over a mouse and keyboard?

It wasnt the cost, it was mostly the time and effort, and I was obsessive about it. If I could get it all back, I would want my time, not the cash LOL.

The controller, the comfort, and the fact that it is standardized among games is a big part too, but if something like this were standardized on PC it would go a long way for me anyhow. It looks nice.

It doesn't take what it used to since most games are ports from consoles a good system last a lot longer these days. I mid level video card and CPU is all you need.

Capable gaming PCs are cheaper than they've ever been. Even with a low $500 budget, all-in on everything, you can put together a very good and small mATX system with a GTX 750 Ti that will run nearly everything well. Bump up another $200-$300 towards the GPU and an SSD and its even better.

1080p gaming is very achievable with a budget these days. What will demand an increase in your budget are things like 1440p or multi-monitor gaming, or large SSD storage. The last thing is becoming less of an issue now that SSDs have come down to around $.50 per GB. 1440p+ is an unavoidable strain on performance that demands lots of graphics horsepower. Its the only reason I'm SLI right now, otherwise a mid-range card would be perfect.

That really surprised me. I can't imagine playing this game on a controller. Being able to whip-turn in this game is so important, not just for aiming but also for triangle jumping to scale parallel walls of buildings, traversing areas, etc etc.

The way you can move in this game is so important, and being able to turn faster with a mouse than with a gamepad is a huge advantage. This is all before we get into how much better mouse and keyboard is for any other shooter anyways. The movement and traversal options make it that much better in Titanfall.

Ya, I probably will. It's way too tempting and I dont do "tempting" well. I love that style of gameplay. Not the mech part, but the fast paced jumping from wall to wall and over things while not in a mech looks like a blast.

Are you saying you prefer a controller vs. mouse+keyboard?

It is of course totally up to you, but I'm surprised if I understand you right. Even auto-aim and all the other aids build into console fps games I have not been able to move past feeling dragged down on a console.

To me the only thing that saves FPS games on the console is that everyone is in the same boat, which is also why the few experiments that have been made letting PC gamers and console gamers share the same server has not made it into customers.

I wasn't terribly impressed, but it is getting rave reviews on pretty much every gaming site. I think you'll be surprised at the sales.

Rave reviews? It's got a Metacritic of 8.6. The user rating is 62. Those are not rave reviews at all.

Polygon – 9/10
Videogamer – 8/10
Xbox Achievements – 90/100
NowGamer – 9/10
CVG – 9/10
Gamespot – 9/10
Joystiq – 4.5/5
IGN – 8.9/10Mirror UK 4/5
EGN- 10/10

Yes, those sound like rave review numbers.

And to add to it, most of these game reviewers are like movie critics. They do it constantly and are very jaded. 8 to 9 of 10 is extremely good for that group.

It's Call of Duty with 'mechs. Meh I'll pass.

Oh and I thought EA was the devil on Daily Tech? Suddenly an EA game is going to lift the turd known as the XBone past the PS4?

I agree about Titanfall, but that doesn't change the fact that it has a very positive buzz right now.

It must really hurt your little anti-MS crusade to have the sales numbers for the two consoles so close in Feb. For a turd, it is selling pretty well. Or are you going to try to make excuses like others on this thread have. Just because the PS4 is selling way above even Sony's expectations doesn't mean the Xbox One isn't selling great as well.

anti-MS crusade?

Oh come now.

Yes the Xbox is selling better, thanks to the fastest price drop in console history, but it's still not even close to total PS4 units.

I'm not buying either console, I don't have a horse in this race. I just want to make sure Microsoft learned their lesson, and that it was NOT cool what they wanted to do with the Xbox. Not cool at all.

The Xbox has always attracted the lowest common denominator when it comes to gaming. Comically large dudes with an IQ of 40 chainsawing aliens to death in an ara of high-tech projectile weapons, that sort of rubbish. So I'm sure Titanfall will do well.

Yes, Gears was a pretty stupid game. But you could make pretty much the same complaint with the Final Fantasy series. Effeminate spiky-haired guys swinging comically huge swords in an era of projectile weapons.

Judging a whole gaming system based on one game is pretty short-sighted.
