Sony won by nearly 30,000 sales

Sony's PlayStation 4 pulled out another monthy sales win over Microsoft's Xbox One, although the gap is starting to narrow.

According to Xbox Wire, Microsoft sold 258,000 Xbox One consoles for the month of February. However, Sony sold around 287,000 PlayStation 4s according to market researchers NPD Group.

Overall hardware sales rose 42 percent year over year and 44 percent month over month. The top-selling games for February were "Call of Duty: Ghosts," "The Lego Movie Videogame," "NBA 2K14," "Thief" and "Grand Theft Auto V."

The PS4 ended up outselling the Xbox One in January as well, where journalist Geoff Keighley -- who spoke with PlayStation SVP Guy Longworth -- said PS4 sales in January nearly doubled the "nearest next gen competitor," which points to the Xbox One.

But the Xbox One was December 2013's winner with 908,000 consoles sold.

In mid-February, it was reported that Sony had sold 5.3 million PS4s globally since launch.

Sales of both consoles are being watched very closely, since many believe the months after the holiday season are more telling of which console wins the race rather than the November-December period, when everyone is spending anyway.

Both Microsoft and Sony released their respective consoles a week apart in November 2013, just in time for the holiday season.

So all these tall tales about Playstation outselling Xbox by 2:1 were complete lies? Just 30,000 units, and Xbox outsold Playstation in December? Pathetic showing PS fanboys. I like both Xbox and Playstation but it seems to me that the PS fanboys are on their high horse and resort to lying and hyperbole way more than Xbox fans.

"So all these tall tales about Playstation outselling Xbox by 2:1 were complete lies?"

I am not sure who said that. All I have seen are #'s. Other than the nasty condescending nature of your post, your info is wrong and shortsighted. Those figures were for the month of Feb. only.

"By last count, Sony noted 6 million consoles sold worldwide. Microsoft last revealed its total sales numbers in January, when the company said it shipped — not sold — 3.9 million Xbox One devices worldwide."

Anyhow, get a grip, its just consoles. Buy the one you want.

Amen. Seriously, too many people get emotional over one console (or GPU,CPU,OS,caffeinated/decaffeinated beverage) over another as if their personal identity or value depends on it.

If you have emotional ties to a product you have to pay money for, and it's not because it was willed to you by your great grandmother's uncle's babysitter's dogsitter's adopted iguana's petfood supplier's cousin thrice removed, then you lose and marketers win. Marketers want to create emotional ties between you and their products because that is how they hook you. Yes, as in an addiction. If you have emotional ties to a product so much that you have to publicly decry a competing product, you either need to check yourself into rehab, or re-evaluate your values system.

Exactly... Pretty sure I have seen that here as several mental cases go ballistic any time anyone says anything about Apple that isnt 110% complimentary.

You're not sure who said that? I've read comments on Dailytech itself with people who claimed it.
Probably from false articles like this:
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-an...

And while it was just February (and again, Xbox One outsold PS4 in December), it still goes to show that Xbox One, at $100 more, is keeping pace with PS4.

Also, this is disingenuous. Sony noted 6 million consoles sold in MARCH. Microsoft noted 3.9 in JANUARY. Sony said it sold 4.2 million in January, a much fairer and reasonable comparison.

Again, I like both Playstation and Xbox, and I have no plans to buy either for several years (I have a gaming PC, and many PS3 and Xbox 360 games I still need to get to). What I am angry about, and ACTUALLY talking about in my now unfairly downvoted comment, is the fanboys who only offer hyperbole and specious "facts" in order to denigrate the other system.

After the years of bashing XB fans in the 360 vs ps3 era its no wonder PS fans are exaggerating and throwing every victory in XB fans faces.

There has been a complete role reversal, so far, the new gen is still new enough that a year from now XB could retake the no1 spot though. Some PS people could end up eating crow because of the early gloating.

360 beat PS3 by what kind of margin? Less than 10%? Current numbers are hardly what you call a "complete reversal". That's a term you use for the previous gen, when Sony should have dominated with PS3 given that PS2 outsold XBox by a factor of 6.

In any case, XBO is far from the sales disaster that everyone seems to be claiming here. It certainly could have been much worse.

Considering the 360 had a substantial head start the 360 it had the lead for some time, but saying the 360 "beat" the PS3 is simply wrong. Today the 360 and the PS3 is even both at around 83 million units sold, so considering the 360 a year before the PS3 you ought to find a different word.

I'd give you one thing though. The XBO sales could have been worse, but seeing as Microsoft has already resorted to dropping the price it seems to me the numbers are certainly a disappointment - just like it is a disappointment that once again the more powerful hardware is not from Redmond.

Sorry. Couldn't make out your infantile video game elitist trolling over the sound of you sucking on your thumb. Grow up and try a new hobby. Maybe video games.

I take offense to that. First of all, I game on BOTH platforms. More on the PC than the PS3/4, mostly because I enjoy 2560x1440 resolution graphics (of which I could have bought two consoles for the two video cards I bought required to run it at high settings...cards that will be outdated in two years).

Second, I don't always sit at home by myself and game. I go places. Family, friends, parties, etc. I take my console with me and make a gaming party and memories with it (and share home videos, pictures, etc. that is on it).

Third, when I do game at home with my PS3 and PS4, I game with my real world friends online since most of them aren't into PC gaming because it's so expensive to keep up with (see above comments of my first point again). Oh, and I'm not using near as much power when I console game over my PC gaming rig.

Everything has its pros and cons, pal.
