New school-themed smartphones aim to boost Motorola Mobility's sales

Motorola Mobility is one of the oldest surviving cell phone brands in the world.  But its tenure with Google Inc. (GOOG) over the last two years failed to stop its slide as it struggled to keep up with the ever-evolving smartphone.  Since then, it's been acquired in a pending deal with Lenovo Group, Ltd.'s (HKG: 0992) struck to the tune of $2.91B USD.

Thus far it appears that Lenovo is looking to step up the strategy Google had started to explore late last year amidst struggling sales of the flagship Moto X.  This dual strategy involves getting more aggressive on price and focus on building phones with unique and customizable looks.

The latest addition to the Moto X is a series of limited edition smartphones for basketball fans.

Moto X

Clearly some schools are missing from there... for example Duke fans were pretty irate.  To go out on a limb, that may be due to issues with some schools not wanting to license their logos and/or asking more for that branding.

While the Moto X is clearly a bit behind the curve in terms of screen resolution and processing/graphics power, it has excellent battery life.  Motorola has been gunning for stronger sales with aggressive price cuts.  Most recently it slashed the price of an off-contract Moto X down to $299 USD in a brief promotion last month.

Currently it's hovering around $330 off-contract:

... don't be surprised if that dips soon, though.

I'd look into one of these if it was offered as a GPE phone. Ironically Google's own brand (until recently), doesn't. They offer a developer edition instead, but good luck finding out finding out what that means. I couldn't find it on their web site.
Should I settle for a nice logo instead?

The phone runs basically stock Android, with just a few custom apps necessary for the Moto X advanced features to work.

That's why there's no Google Play edition, it's already stock.

If you are that worried about updates, and cant figure out how to flash a custom ROM, just get an iPhone. /rolls eyes.

Not for you... You should just tie a string to two cans, as that is about your competence level.

OR at the very least dont get a 3 year old Android OS that is vulnerable to attacks, as anything 4 or higher is not, and 4 was released in late 2011.

Seriously, just stop.

www.androidauthority.com/android-malware-threat-r eport-279702/

"less than 0.001% of all surveyed Android app installations lead to harmful effects to the user. "

I have never seen an Android virus and I admiun/support over 150 of them.

It doesn't dawn on you that AV companies make their money from people buying AV software. If they are realistic about what is really happening, they lose money. No-one is arguing that Android 2.x is insecure. No-one is arguing that there are still 100's of millions of 2.x phones out there. That is going to happen when you sell over a billion phones over a few years. Its over 1.5 million a day and climbing fast. Again, no-one is suggesting anyone uses Android 2.x. Fortunately, 3 years ago, a better version came out, stop spreading FUD.

Every single thing you post is bunk. You are like a child.

I guess you missed the news of the huge iOS security flaws that went on for years that just now got fixed? Apple knew about it, and just went on denying it, of course.

As far as your link, how many times do I have to debunk you on this?

"According to Kaspersky Lab experts, the majority of malicious Android applications are currently developed in Russia."

From your own link.

This is why Android infection in places like America are less than 1 percent. Because in places like China and Russia, they avoid the Google Play store and use unverified apps from third party app stores.

I guess by your logic Windows is crap software too, right? Because it allows people to install infected applications and everything else!

Honestly, coming out of left field with this in a discussion that has NOTHING to do with it only shows your increasing anti-Android bias. All this from someone who so-called "quit" Daily Tech two or three times now.

Yeah those numbers aren't even believable. USA has MORE infections than China, where they don't even use the Google Play store and basically install virused third-party app-store apps like it's a fashion trend?

Not even remotely believable.

Your apparently security vendetta has caused you to lose all possible perspective.

I would like to see an unbiased breakdown of where Kaspersky has arrived at these results and collected this data. It goes against EVERY other source I've seen.

And please, they are NOT unbiased. They want to sell you security software.

We both know custom ROMs are rarely 100% functional. Cyanogen doesn't seem to have anything for Moto X, not even a nightly build (unless their pages play tricks on me).

It seems to me future OS updates are more important to you than current functionality and you are afraid to take control of it on your own... Moto X is on the absolute latest OS and as a flagship, will be updated. Why is it such a sticking point for you'? If getting that is of utmost importance,Get an iPhone. It cant even do what Android 4 did 2.5 years ago, but hey, its the "latest" so it must be good right?

There's so much FUD being thrown around when it comes to Android and updates, I honestly can't blame him.

I wouldn't want to custom ROM my Moto X unless I knew for a fact all the unique apps and features from Motorola worked with it. I actually haven't looked into that, so I can't say either way. But for him it's a concern, understandable.

Just like when you ROM a Galaxy Note, all the really cool stuff doesn't work anymore.

I know, I just hate seeing people on a tech forum saying "I dont want [insert phone] because I don't know if it will get updates"

There are SOOOO many options, and again, this is a tech forum, not a newb info site.

I just want a device that always runs the latest OS. I'm sorry you have a problem with that.
If Android was sold as a separate SKU, like Windows, I'd have no problem taking updates into my own hands. But it isn't.

I was trying to figure out how to save my launcher desktop config on my Nexus 5 (I hate having to set everything up again if I wipe and reinstall or some weirdness happens and I have to reset). Turns out Google rolled the default launcher into the Google Search app - back it up and you have a backup of your launcher desktop. So I suspect they're trying to move Android in a direction where anyone can get the "stock" skin-less Android experience if they want.

That said, Motorola is pretty good about keeping up to date with Android releases. And on the Moto X in particular, their "skin" contains a lot of features which make the Moto X such a nice device. Active notifications, auto-unlock on bluetooth connection, etc. I'm pretty sure the always-on voice recognition is part of their launcher too. The spoken "OK Google" functionality on my Nexus 5 disappeared when I tried switching to a different launcher.

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/google-just...

It's just part of a larger move to gut Android and move as much as possible into Google Play Services. Which is good, because it lets Google update stuff instead of carriers, but it's also bad because Google Play Services are not open.

Nice thought, but it would never work... A ROM on a phone is far far more complex than just an OS install.

So... What do you have now and/or what are you looking at that supports all this?

Actually, it's just an OS. But Android is an OS that doesn't include drivers, hence the nice mess we're in.

I have a device that's stuck with ICS. Alternatives would be iOS and WP, both of which come with proper drivers and guarantee speedy updates. I will not touch iOS with a 10' pole, but WP may become attractive if Microsoft ever crawls out of the hole they dug themselves into.

"Actually, it's just an OS. But Android is an OS that doesn't include drivers, hence the nice mess we're in."

Actually there is alot more to it than OS and drivers. Even for the iPhone, its just that they do one per year, and release the previous couple years at the same time when all are ready so it seams easy, it isnt. Even Apple spends a buttload of time and money on it. Google does the Nexus line this way, and most major players high end phones do get updated. Even the GS3 is getting KK.

Still, get the phone you want that has the features you want. Getting a phone today based on potential future updates is kind of insane.

I'm certainly tired of crappy ROMS with lots of bugs, and having to resort to hacked factory software to unbrick my phone. The iPhone just needs a bigger screen, and I'll go back. I like IOS better, but not enough to overcome the small screen size.

A legitimate concern. However Motorola has always been very on-point with updates compared to other OEM's.

I can see how you would be worried considering the ownership change and everything being in flux.

http://www.geek.com/android/moto-x-gets-even-more-...

Looks like even as recent as two days ago, the Moto X keeps getting updates. Impressive.

I don't see the developer edition being worth it. It's the same phone with an unlocked bootloader as far as I can tell. Not really a phone for general consumer use anyway.

I think the ID was created a few years later... Is my post count over that period supposed to mean something? Nevermind. Like I care what your sad mind thinks. I don't think your neurons are quite firing correctly Mitch. What exactly is your point here on this MotoX collegiate skin thread? Android 2.x is insecure and there are still 100's of millions of phones out there with it installed? OK, we know, everyone knows. It must be on purpose because the info is well known public knowledge that has been available for a long time. Therefore you must be trolling and lying on purpose. What a waste of skin.
