The final launch of "Project Spark" is expected later this year
Microsoft is bringing a beta version of "Project Spark" to the Xbox One console, allowing gamers to create custom games that cross multiple platforms.
, "Project Spark" will be made available starting today in beta. It's open to both developers and interested gamers.
"Project Spark" allows users to create a game within a game, which can be any genre from third-person shooters, to 2D platforms, to tower-defense games and even action games. Users create all aspects of gameplay, including characters, missions and worlds.
"Project Spark" was originally in test form for Windows 8.1 in December 2013, but now, Xbox One gamers will be able to create and play their games on Microsoft's latest console.
If the user has been working on a game in "Project Spark" using a Windows 8.1-powered PC, the controls from a mouse and keyboard are automatically converted to the Xbox One controller (and vice versa).
Microsoft used its Kodu platform and SmartGlass integration to allow users to play their games on tablets as well.
If you want to get in on the action via Xbox One, you have to sign up for access (unless you're already using the Windows 8.1 version, which automatically gives you access to the Xbox One version).
The final launch of "Project Spark" is expected later this year.

This was what make UT2K4 such a fantastic game--giving the consumers & fans a chance to develop their own stuff. It's also the reason why I dislike console FPS, because my total UT2K4 file size was about 6x larger than the fresh install size--all due to mods, maps, conversions and add-ons.
We may be approaching a day where that kind of versatility finally makes its way to consoles, but we're not there yet. And even when we get there, I still will prefer the PC interface.
