The final launch of "Project Spark" is expected later this year

Microsoft is bringing a beta version of "Project Spark" to the Xbox One console, allowing gamers to create custom games that cross multiple platforms.

According to Xbox Wire, "Project Spark" will be made available starting today in beta. It's open to both developers and interested gamers.

"Project Spark" allows users to create a game within a game, which can be any genre from third-person shooters, to 2D platforms, to tower-defense games and even action games. Users create all aspects of gameplay, including characters, missions and worlds.

"Project Spark" was originally in test form for Windows 8.1 in December 2013, but now, Xbox One gamers will be able to create and play their games on Microsoft's latest console.

If the user has been working on a game in "Project Spark" using a Windows 8.1-powered PC, the controls from a mouse and keyboard are automatically converted to the Xbox One controller (and vice versa).

Microsoft used its Kodu platform and SmartGlass integration to allow users to play their games on tablets as well.

If you want to get in on the action via Xbox One, you have to sign up for access (unless you're already using the Windows 8.1 version, which automatically gives you access to the Xbox One version).

The final launch of "Project Spark" is expected later this year.

I signed up for the beta back when I was trying Windows 8, and I eventually got in... after I ran with my proverbial tail between my legs back to Windows 7. So, I haven't been able to try it out, but the invitation e-mail said that we'd get invites to the XBOX One beta as well. So, I'm hoping Microsoft sends me a code soon, as I've been tempted to toy with this!
