HTC's new mid-tier offering to sport a plastic body, 13MP rear camera

On Monday, it was reported that HTC was looking to bring some much-needed attention to the mid-tier market after focusing much of its attention for the past year on the flagship “One” and “One Max” smartphones. With Samsung and Apple pretty much assaulting the high-end of the market with the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5S respectively, HTC has only been left with table scraps.

Reuters indicated that HTC is targeting $150 to $300 price bracket to claw back some market share, and the newly leaked Desire 8 looks to fit that bill. According to Engadget and MyDrivers, the new mid-tier smartphone will feature a plastic body instead of the metal body featured on the One, One Max, and One Mini.

The Desire 8 will come with a 5.5” display, although the resolution isn’t known at this time (we’re assuming it’ll be at least be 720p). Other features include a 13MP rear camera, 5MP front-facing camera, dual stereo speakers, and dual-SIM capability. The smartphone will be available in red, yellow, orange, blue, and green.

The Desire 8 is said to be launching on March 18th in China, so we’ll have to wait until at least then to get an idea of U.S. availability.

Calm down chief. I have big hands and love my Note 3, I can't even use a stupid iPhone quickly because the screen is just to small so using an iPhone or small screen is very cumbersome for those of us with large hands.

There is a reason they make large and small phones...there is a market for both. Buy what works for you, and I'll buy what works for me.

To tell them to stop making phones in a certain form factor just because they don't fit your lady's hands is absurd.

You misread my comment.

I am complaining because I don't want a huge phone. I shouldn't need two hands to operate a phone. She doesn't care either way because no phone really fits her hands.

I'm just getting sick of all the "next big phone" announcements.

What would be the ideal size for you? I want something larger than my current 4" phone, but I don't want a mammoth 5.5" or 6" phone.

Somewhere between 4.5" to 5" would be ideal.

I'm currently on a Moto X right now. It's almost ideal. Just a smidge too wide.

I'd say 4.5-4.7" screen in a 130ish mm x 62ish mm body.

I have a gooPhone i5 as a toy (it's an iPhone clone that runs Android). It's too skinny and the screen is a little too small.

I wish Sony was bringing the D5503 to the US.

What are you, Goldilocks of phone size?

Know what I hate? Every time a phone is announced we spend more time talking about some guys shrimpy little hands than the phone!

Yet you can't use a 5" screen phone with one hand. I can use my G2 with one hand easily and I'm not a big guy. That said, the G2's 5.2" screen is the max size for me. It's only a little wider and longer than my old SGN.

If you can palm a ball, the Moto X certainly isn't too wide for you. Its the most ergonomic phone out there.

You seem to spend more time bashing people for not thinking like you do. "What, you don't agree with me? Screw you buddy and the horse you rode in on -- and if you rode here in an EV; screw your momma too!" :-)

Personally, I don't want a bigass "super phone". 5" is my "just right" [that's what she said]

Hey those are good zingers!

Brandon I'm not "bashing" him for not wanting a big phone. But his OP is him screaming at HTC for releasing a big phone...I mean come on. Ridiculous.

Variety is whats so great about the Android market. All phones have basically the same internals, just pick and choose the features and form factor you want.
