It's an attempt to help consumers find it more easily
Microsoft has been doing some rebranding lately as its restructuring process rolls on, and Office Web Apps could be the next to get a name change.
, Microsoft may rebrand "Office Web Apps" to "Office Online" in an effort to make the apps easier for consumers to find.
Currently, Office Web Apps is tucked away inside SkyDrive and Outlook.com. For a typical consumer, finding the suite of online apps can be challenging.
Here's a screenshot from
that could indicate an upcoming change:
But Microsoft is likely thinking that renaming it to "Office Online" will paint a clearer picture of what the suite is and make it easier to find. Each individual Office app will be rebranded as well to Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online and OneNote Online.
This doesn't seem too surprising, as Office Web Apps was a bit of a mouthful and was likely confusing to the typical consumer. Microsoft also just changed SkyDrive's name to "OneDrive."
Microsoft is in the midst of some big changes, as it announced a restructuring plan last summer that will
unify the Xbox, Windows Phone and PC units
. It has also had several executive shake-ups in the ensuing months, and learned of the
retirement of its CEO Steve Ballmer

If you work in marketing, part of your "success" criteria in doing your job is to come up with "new" catchy things that is supposedly helpful in making the product sell, even though is technically bogus and entirely stupid or unnecessary. Not coming up with something even remotely stupid is "fail" by default so... there you go...
