It's an attempt to help consumers find it more easily
Microsoft has been doing some rebranding lately as its restructuring process rolls on, and Office Web Apps could be the next to get a name change.
, Microsoft may rebrand "Office Web Apps" to "Office Online" in an effort to make the apps easier for consumers to find.
Currently, Office Web Apps is tucked away inside SkyDrive and Outlook.com. For a typical consumer, finding the suite of online apps can be challenging.
Here's a screenshot from
that could indicate an upcoming change:
But Microsoft is likely thinking that renaming it to "Office Online" will paint a clearer picture of what the suite is and make it easier to find. Each individual Office app will be rebranded as well to Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online and OneNote Online.
This doesn't seem too surprising, as Office Web Apps was a bit of a mouthful and was likely confusing to the typical consumer. Microsoft also just changed SkyDrive's name to "OneDrive."
Microsoft is in the midst of some big changes, as it announced a restructuring plan last summer that will
unify the Xbox, Windows Phone and PC units
. It has also had several executive shake-ups in the ensuing months, and learned of the
retirement of its CEO Steve Ballmer

yeah, I've tried those free office apps. They suck. The formatting is all off, the interface is hard to use, the logic behind where they put various features is way off, and the file formats don't work between the free apps, let alone with MS Office. I have yet to see one decent version. Don't try putting your resume together with one of these and then send it to a potential employer. It will come out a mess and you won't even be considered.
MS's Office is far superior, and while some people are willing to go for a free app for inferior results, many people aren't. Dozens of people putting together a program for free in their spare time doesn't compare to hundreds of people being paid to put a program together.

I'm using LibreOffice. Formatting is perfectly fine (exactly the way I set it). The logic behind user interface is the one I am used to from old versions of Microsoft Office (97).
Microsoft's Office however is incompatible with its own files from previous versions (formatting is off, headers/footers stop displaying correctly etc.) and the logic behind its user interface completely escapes me - I cannot even locate most functionality I used to be able to find in menus and toolbars so I dumped their Office once and for all. To top it off they keep adding useless bloat with every version, it's just growing in size while becoming less and less functional with each user interface revision.
I wouldn't bother with M$ Office even if it was free as long as other functional alternatives exist.
Oh and only somebody completely clueless would send out his resume as an Office document (of any kind) - this is what PDF is for.
