Smartphone shipments set a record in 2013
IDC has announced that 2013 was a record setting year for the global smartphone market. According to the research firm, the total number of smartphones shipped hit 1 billion units for the first time.
The 1.004 billion figure represents a 38.4% increase compared to the 725.3 million units shipped in 2012. Smartphones accounted for 55.1% of all mobile phones shipped in 2013, which is an increase from 41.7% of all smartphones shipped in 2012.
IDC numbers showed that in Q4 2013 alone, over 284.4 million smartphones shipped globally. That is an increase of 24.2% compared to the same quarter the previous year.
"The sheer volume and strong growth attest to the smartphone's continued popularity in 2013," says Ramon Llamas, Research Manager with IDC's Mobile Phone team.
"Total smartphone shipments reached 494.4 million units worldwide in 2011, and doubling that volume in just two years demonstrates strong end-user demand and vendor strategies to highlight smartphones."
Samsung ended the year as the
leader in smartphone shipments
according to IDC with a double-digit lead over Apple.
Apple was the second place smartphone vendor
followed by Huawei, Lenovo, and LG in order.
Interestingly Lenovo doesn't have any devices in North America or Western Europe,
yet it still sits in the fourth spot

Seems weird to word it like that;
increment will always be the first (and only) time.

I think the author meant "1 billion units per year". So the first time reference is valid, since some year in the future the market might be saturated and they only ship 1 billion, again.
