Pricey window may take some time to replace

Snowstorm Janus has been making a mess on the East Coast of the U.S. this last week.  But the snowplows were out and about in New York City streets, and that's when things went terribly wrong for a familiar tech company.

Like the iPhones it sells, the 15-panel iconic glass "Cube" that caps Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) Fifth Avenue store proved a bit fragile to impact.

A worker clearing snow Tuesday night apparently bumped their snow blower into one of the cube windows, which promptly shattered.  The 32-foot window will be an expensive repair job -- the total system cost $7.6M USD to build; replacing the cracked panel in the southeast corner of the cube is expected to cost $450,000 USD.

Hopefully they bought the screen protection plan.

Incidentally, this is the first minor disaster to strike the popular Apple hub, which is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.  The store was also flooded back in May due to construction issues.

At least by now the beleaguered Genius Bar employees will be read for just about anything, next time disaster strikes.

Wow! There are a lot of Apple haters out there. I'll never understand it. Yes, the wealthy snobs purchase apple devices but so do average people. That is why they are so successful. Wealthy snobs alone cannot make a company as successful as apple has become. And you cant deny that apple has been a significant contributor to the advancement of computer and hardware design, and especially marketing savvy. Regardless of Steve Jobs, who usually gets all the credit, there are some amazing people who have helped build apple into a powerhouse company. Don't hate people for dreaming. Everyone thought how cool it would be to have a touch screen phone, like something from the future, but only apple was able to make it become mainstream. How cool is it, from a design perspective, to have a glass cube as a store entry? It's modern and futuristic. It won't be perfect but don't bring the hate when its destroyed. You wouldn't want your business ruined either.

Only Apple would dismantle a functional glass building because it had too many panes and replace it with one aesthetically identical.

LMAO, Apple setting the standard for quality.
You want standard-setting quality, go to Scandinavia. Nokia made indestructible cell-phones, Volvo built a car that still hasn't stopped after 3 million miles, Thor is a big part of our language (Thursday is named for him; Mill and meal are derived from Mjolnir) because he was busting ass for humanity, and the Swedish bikini team.

Apple has set the standard for abusing customers with outrageous prices and shit support. When a cat pees on a computer, they refuse to even touch it, because of some hippie biohazard crap. Any other company would have fixed or replaced it.

Nice try on the etymology:

"Old English mylen, based on late Latin molinum, from Latin mola 'grindstone, mill', from molere 'to grind'."

(Similarly, think 'molar' as in tooth).

By the by, why is your cat urinating on your computer?
