It launches January 10
With rumors of more competitive T-Mobile plans just around the corner at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week, Sprint has jumped the gun and announced its new family plan.
, the No. 3 U.S. carrier, is launching a new offering at the end of the week called the "Sprint Framily Plan." And no, that's not a typo folks -- it's actually called "framily," because the plans can be made up of both friends and family.
Despite the odd name, the new plan could actually offer some considerable savings. Here's how it works: the first person pays $55 a month for the first line of service, which gets unlimited voice service, text messaging and 1GB of data. For each additional customer that joins the framily plan, the cost per person goes down $5 a month up to a maximum monthly discount of $30 a month.
In other words, the more people added on to the framily plan, the greater savings everyone receives. The company says that if you can get at least seven people on the framily plan, everyone can get unlimited talk, text and 1GB of data for $25 per month per line. Also, it's open to new and existing customers.
But framily plan customers aren't locked at just 1GB of data. If anyone on the plan wants more, they can pay an extra $20 a month per line for unlimited data. What's more is that customers who opt for this plan are eligible for a new phone every year.
Oh, and if you're worried about a friend or family member ditching out on their part of the bill, don't worry -- Sprint will send every member of the framily plan their own separate phone bill.
Sprint's latest announcement is likely in preparation for T-Mobile's upcoming CES announcement, which is expected today.
T-Mobile has already rocked the world of wireless carriers with its "UnCarrier" strategy, where it eliminated contracts for reduced cell phone plans in March and introduced an
early phone upgrade program
in July. Then, in October, it started offering a free unlimited
international text and data plan
However, it's been reported that SoftBank Corp. -- a Japanese telecommunications and Internet corporation -- has met with banks Credit Suisse Group AG, Mizuho Bank Ltd, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Deutsche Bank AG to
grab a majority stake in T-Mobile
from its parent company, Deutsche Telekom AG, starting in April. The deal has been valued at around $20 billion.
SoftBank already acquired Sprint for $21.6 billion last summer.
If you're interested in Sprint's latest framily plan, it launches January 10.

I have 4 phones on Ting, with average Bills at $62/mo for all 4 phones. Ting isn't great if you use a lot of data, but we have a hard time using 1GB each month.
