Devil's advocate, but aren't most of the apps on the apple app store free?
Both the android market place and the apple app store have tons of free software, you don't need to spend any money. I very rarely have. Never spent a dollar on the apple app store for my first year but I benefited tremondously from it's selection and ecosystem. (iPhone 3G was my first smart phone due to carrier circumstances that made it the only phone able to tether for free.)
